Chapter One – Enter Ness

May 30, 2012. 6 o’ clock A.M. I was sleeping in my upstairs bedroom after a good day’s work. Paula was away in Twoson visiting family. I was just beginning to doze off when the phone rang. I stumbled out of bed and opened the door leading out of my room to the hallway. Easy to remember the layout of the house. I had lived here since I was born, and my parents gave it to me when they left to move to Threed. “It’s a lot quieter out there”, they said. Funny, considering what happened there 17 years ago. I hope that something like that never happened again.

After making it to the living room, I picked up the phone. “Hello?”

“Ness?” It was Chief Strong’s voice on the other end. “I need you to get to the police station ASAP. It’s an emergency.” His voice definitely had a touch of urgency to it.

“Sure thing, Chief. I’m on my way.”

I wonder what’s going on, I thought to myself as I put on my uniform, pulled my gun out of the dresser and clipped it to my belt, and made my way out the door. I was soon about to find out.

7 A.M.: As I made my way down the path leading into town, I couldn’t help but notice how quiet it was. It was as if everything had ceased to make a sound, like there was something lurking in the shadows, waiting to emerge. As I was pondering this, I heard a twig snap behind me. I turned around, my gun out and pointed in front of me, to see the figure of a man. As it drew closer, I could see it was Mr. Minch from next door. I had not heard from him in several years since he moved back to Onett. Having lost his position with Monotoli, he was “forced to”, as he had said. “It’s not like there isn’t anything worth while out here in this filth of a town.” That’s what he muttered as he moved back into the house ten years ago.

“Mr. Minch, what are you doing out so early,” I called. But he didn’t answer. Instead he came closer to where I was. It sounded like he was dragging his feet as he walked. “Mr. Minch, are you hurt?” No answer. He just kept walking. As he came into the moonlight, I gasped at what I saw. His skin was of a greyish hue. His eyes had no pupils, and his clothes were all tattered. He looked as though he had been attacked and had been wandering for days. He gave and unearthly moan and rushed towards me.
