Many planets in this universe have life. Some planets produce stable life forms that are able to evolve and develop over time into powerful beings whose influence extends throughout space. Many more planets, however, produce life that is unstable and damages itself by existing. Planets with this kind of life have life forms that develop more quickly, but, as they evolve, they become more unstable and destructive and, eventually, the psychic waves they produce cause their planet to explode.

Earth was one of these planets. Earth had a savior. Its name was Giygas.

The legends say that Giygas was a "cosmic destroyer". This is due to the fact that the Apple of Enlightenment was completely biased against Giygas and his kind. The Apple of Enlightenment was a propaganda newspaper run by some frog-like creatures, known as Dfxk, who had been in conflict with Giygas's species over the ore-rich planet known as "Ahtbroecht". They had something of a grudge against Giygas in particular, it was a rich, influential, public figure in its society. Giygas was also well respected as a preserver of planets with unusual species that would have been lost if not for its efforts. Giygas would visit a planet, take over the souls of its creatures, then freeze the planet in a dark state of semi-death. By doing this, Giygas prevented the psychic meltdown that was so common on strange little planets. The creatures on one of these planets lost all free will, and lived in a state of darkness, but they lived, and their planet did not explode from the unsteady psychic waves that these creatures emanated when left to their own devices.

Surprisingly, there are a lot of odd little planets like this. Nature, apparently, is fond of creating unstable lifeforms with unstable minds. There are very few planets with life that lasted very long. Giygas's species was one of the more powerful, stable species in the universe, and hence, had been able to last for a while and reach a high level of technology as well as a very advanced state of consciousness. This is what allowed them to control the minds of all of the life on a planet at once. Their technology then allowed them to take this control they had and transfer it to a machine which would run things on auto-pilot from then on. Once the entire process was completed, they could sit back and study the lifeforms of the planet. Giygas's kind did this, not only for the pleasure of scientific pursuit, but because they felt it was their duty to preserve any forms of life they could.

Earth was a problem. Though Giygas's kind, and certainly Giygas, as a leader in the field of planet preservation, had seen many extremely unstable life forms, they had never seen anything quite as wild and out of control as the creatures of Earth. The psychic waves they produced were thick in the space around the planet and threatened, not only to destroy Earth itself, but also some of its nearest neighbors. The creatures on Earth were also very interesting and had evolved in very unusual ways. Giygas and its people considered it top priority that the planet be preserved for study.

The other problem with Earth, and this problem was related to the strong psychic waves, was that the creatures on the planet were very stubborn. Giygas had never encountered such stubborn creatures. They did not take well to being manipulated and responded by turning violent towards other creatures. Giygas had to take things slowly, much slower than it liked. The creatures of Earth practically had to be subdued one at a time. Giygas, of course had time. Not only was his species so advanced as to have thrown off the chains of mortality, but they had mastered a form of time travel as well. It wasn't time travel as you typically think of it, they could not just travel backwards and forwards in time, it was more like an ability to suspend time in an area surrounding the Giygoid and work from that time "bubble" on things in the normal time stream. In essence, it gave Giygas the ability to compress its work into a shorter time period. For those of you who still don't get it, it made Giygas faster, think of it that way.

It turned out, however, that Giygas did not have as much time as it thought. The Dfxk decided to interfere with Giygas's work. They sent a messenger, who called himself Buzz Buzz, to Earth to try to convince some particularly powerful creatures the Dfxk had observed to fight against Giygas. Buzz Buzz formed a body that he would be able to show to the humans without overwhelming them. He planned on helping the humans to spread the anti-Giygas message. The Dfxk realized how stubborn humans were and were counting on the fact that if some of them "rebelled" against Giygas, it would slow down an already slow process. What the Dfxk hadn't foreseen was that Buzz Buzz's weak, mortal body would be so easily tired out and destroyed. Nor did they think Giygas would notice their meddling so quickly. Giygas did notice, however, and sent a robot to destroy Buzz Buzz.

After Buzz Buzz's body was destroyed by the lethal combination of the Starman Jr. and Lardna Minch, the Dfxk finally realized how good Giygas was at what it did. The Dfxk decided they would just let what they had started take place, and, in the meantime, they would distract Giygas from its work, forcing it to leave an inferior machine in place. The Dfxk managed to somehow bother Giygas enough that it left Earth for a while to the care of one of the Giygoid's highly advanced machines.

When Giygas left, the last thing it did was to set the machine to destroy some of the more powerful and stubborn creatures on Earth. For only the third time ever out of about 1000 planets, Giygas was going to have to destroy some individuals to save the collective group. The machine did its job with the help of a number of smaller machines known to Earthlings as Starmen, Lil' Ufos, and others, as well as some biological creations of the Giygoids, like Mooks.

The rest of the story you already know. Ness and all of humanity proved to be more stubborn than any of the wise Giygoids had imagined. They even managed to channel a planet's worth of psychic waves through the machine Giygas had left in place and to destroy it. When the Giygoids heard this, they were, for the first time in aeons, stunned. That the backwards little planet of Earth had destroyed their technology and undone all of their work was almost unconceivable.

The Dfxk were ecstatic. They had not expected that the Earthlings would do so well. They had only expected Giygas to be mildly annoyed, instead, Giygas became depressed and withdrawn over its failure. Without one of their greatest speakers (and I use the term loosely, Giygoids do not speak) gone, the Giygoids lost the debate that was being used to determine which species would get Ahtbroecht.

While Ness, his friends, and the stubbornness of Earth may have doomed the planet to a shorter lifespan, they did teach the Giygoids something. While Giygas was in meditation over its failure, it realized, the creatures of Earth were not to be pitied! They were unstable, they lived short lives, and they would ultimately destroy themselves, but they were like an exploding super nova, brief, but beautiful. A short, brilliant life can be every bit as wonderful as a long, calmer one. For the few thousand years more it lasted before exploding, Earth was a favorite subject of study for the Giygoids. Earth's precious creatures were made more precious by their short existence; the Giygoids actually mourned the loss of their "little friends".
