Everyone in the coliseum applauded after Phenyl's announcement. Then Phenyl told everyone to be quiet so he could explain the rules of the Super Smash Bros. Tournament.
"We have set up three different parts to the Super Smash Bros. Tournament to add maximum challenge! The first part is of course, the Single Elimination Tournament! Everyone will be divided into six groups of two and each group will duke it out until only one undefeated victor remains! You can lose only if you fall out of the battle ring or give up! But there had better not be any giving up, because that would be a major upset! After our victor is discovered, the second part will begin. I will explain when the time comes so it will be a surprise! Got it?" The audience cheered. "Good! Now here is the lineup!"
All of the fighters went to the windows for a better look. But they didn't need to since a large video screen came out of the ceiling and displayed the lineups. Ness was to battle Bowser first. Luigi would fight Pikachu second. Samus and Mario would bash third. Link and DK would duke it out fourth. Kirby and Yoshi would fight fifth. And Capt Falcon and Fox would finish in the sixth fight. All around the room, fighters were either smiling because they had an opponent that seemed easy, or they were pale in the face because they were fighting someone who seemed extremely powerful. Others didn't even seem to care.
"How can I fight something like that?" Ness asked himself when he looked at Bowser. Bowser was slowly burning one of the sofas to a toasty crisp with his flame breath. "My PSI Rockin would get him for sure, but I can only use PSI Fire and PSI Thunder…"
"Let's now begin!" Phenyl exclaimed. The crowd cheered loudly. "Ness and Bowser, you two are up first!" The crowd cheered even louder. Ness and Bowser walked out onto the arena and suddenly they noticed just how big the crowd was. Millions seemed to be cheering all at once. Phenyl held up his hand for silence but the crowd wouldn't stop cheering. Just when Phenyl was about to whistle into the microphone the crowd became deathly silent except for a few whispers and murmurs. "Did I do something wrong? Or is it my breath? Is my hair okay? Then why are you all so silent? I don't whistle that badly, do I?" Phenyl asked feverishly. He turned around and gasped. "Kirby! You don't fight until the fifth battle! Get off the arena!"
Bowser had stepped onto a large pink ball that had now become a flat pancake. Bowser was putting every bit of weight as he could muster on Kirby. Suddenly, the pink pancake jumped up like a spring and Bowser flew up, up, up, and out of sight. The pink pancake reformed into a ball, and grew eyes, feet, and a smiling mouth.
"What is THAT?!" Phenyl yelled.
"Jiggly…" Said the pink ball of fluff.
"IT'S JIGGLYPUFF!!!" Yelled a few people in the crowd. Jigglypuff ran over to Phenyl, knocked him down and stole his microphone. Then she began to sing.
"Jiiiiiiigaleeeeeepuuuuuuuff… jigaliiiii……puuuuf…" Soon, everyone began to fall asleep from the soft melody. Just before Phenyl fell asleep he pressed a button the floor and caused the arena to change into the Brinstar level. Phenyl woke up immediately since he was on the lake of acid and he was thrown from the arena. Ness was sleeping softly on the highest platform but Jigglypuff shared the same fate as Phenyl. When Jigglypuff landed she dropped the microphone so Phenyl grabbed it and whistled right into it, causing everyone to wake up with a start. After a few minutes of yawning Phenyl decided to put Jigglypuff into the Tournament.
"This isn't going well… two substitutions already…" Phenyl sighed as he came out of the handicap room hallway and back into the arena. Then Jigglypuff reentered the arena, right behind Phenyl. "Here is our new contestant! Welcome Jigglypuff!"
The audience was silent.
"Jiggly…" Jigglypuff began to fill up with air and grow to a massive size. The crowd clapped quickly. Jigglypuff jumped onto the arena and struck a fighting pose.
"Now let the battle… begin!"
The ground began to rise up as the arena changed into its new form. When it was done, the arena had become Saffron City. Ness and Jigglypuff were on top of two different roofs and were planning their first attacks. Ness suddenly ran ahead and smacked Jigglypuff with his baseball bat. Jigglypuff flew away from the rooftop but she returned by filling with air. When she landed, she struck Ness with a powerful Mega Punch. Then Jigglypuff began to sing. Fortunately, the crowd was incredibly loud so Ness didn't hear her song. Ness sent out a blast of PSI Fire and Jigglypuff became trapped in a column of flames. Ness launched attack after attack with his bat until Jigglypuff was heavily damaged. When the fire finally extinguished, Ness ran forward and smaaaaashed Jigglypuff into an open elevator shaft. Just as Jigglypuff got to her feet, an Electrode emerged from the elevator and exploded with a flash of light and fire. Jigglypuff flew out of the arena within a few seconds and landed in the crowded stands.
"The winner of the first match is Ness, with flying colors and puff balls!" Phenyl announced. The skyscrapers faded away and Ness walked briskly to the building where the other fighters were. Jigglypuff followed soon afterward, with a pouting look on her face. Ness thought of apologizing for a moment, but he changed his mind when Jigglypuff began taking her anger out one of the chairs.
The next battle was between Luigi and Pikachu, and the arena changed into the classic mushroom kingdom. Luigi was at a disadvantage throughout the fight. His attacks kept missing and the pipes kept sending him to the gap in the middle. After a few minutes, Pikachu finally KO'd Luigi with a bolt of lightning. Both fighters were so tired so they had to be carried back into the building by the arena.
"Now for our match, plumber." Samus said to Mario as she walked out the door. "Don't think I'll be beaten easy just because I'm a girl." The battle between Mario and Samus was very intense on the back of the Great Fox. Samus launched a series of energy attacks that pounded Mario into the ground, then Mario hit Samus with a tornado attack of fists that sent Samus skyward. As Samus was falling back down to the platform, Mario leaped into the air. Samus changed into Morph Ball form and dropped a bomb that messed up Mario's timing. Mario's Super Jump Punch missed entirely and gave Samus the opening she was waiting for. She kicked Mario in the stomach and he landed outside of the ring with a thud.
"The winner is metal-clad Samus Aran!" Phenyl clapped along with the crowd. "Nice try Mario! Maybe your luck will change in the next part of the Tournament!" Mario slowly stumbled back to the building by the arena to rest. Samus was more than excited about her win. She began to brag to Capt. Falcon back at the rest house, which made him scowl. Ness got in a better position so he could see the next battle clearly.
"Link! DK! Your battle is now!" Phenyl announced. DK and Link jumped up onto the arena and prepared for the next fight. But when Link unsheathed his sword, people throughout the arena gasped in horror. "No folks, do you think I would allow someone in battle with a dangerous object like a sword?" Yes's echoed throughout the coliseum. "Oh. Well I didn't. In the handicap room I gave Link a special device that creates a thin energy shield around his sword, that way he can't kill anyone! Isn't that considerate of me?" The audience booed. "Now let the battle begin!" The arena changed into Hyrule Castle and the battle began.
The battle began a bit even but Link managed to gain the advantage toward the end. Link threw his Boomerang and although it missed DK narrowly Link managed to hit DK with a Spin Attack. DK countered with a Spinning Kong but he didn't manage to do much damage. Link attacked with his sword so many times and so quickly, DK couldn't strike back. Link finally finished off DK with another Spin Attack.
The next battle was between Kirby and Yoshi. The fight was on Yoshi's Island and the final outcome of this battle was very unexpected. Kirby attacked first and began pounding Yoshi into the ground when all of a sudden Yoshi got his second wind and evened the damage. But even after Kirby ate Yoshi and copied his Egg Lay technique, Yoshi still won.
"Great fight you two! That has got to be the most amazing battle yet, and we have just begun! Now the last battle for today is between Capt. Falcon and Fox! Come on up here!"
Fox and Capt. Falcon took fighting poses and glared at each other from across the arena. The arena transformed into a replica of the Great Fox again.
Capt. Falcon dominated the match from beginning to end. He started immediately with a swift kick to Fox's jaw, which allowed Capt. Falcon to plant even more blows. Capt. Falcon used every technique he had at his disposal to send Fox flying out of the arena. Fox tried to get back with his Fire Fox attack but he couldn't reach far enough. Fox fell to the ground of the arena and landed with a loud smash.
"Capt. Falcon wins in record time! It seems we have discovered who our champion may be!" Phenyl yelled. The audience cheered. As Fox and Capt. Falcon began to head back to the building by the arena Phenyl stopped them. "That was the last battle for tonight. Now all the fighters get to rest in our complementary hotel, while everyone else will have to spend the night in the ships they came in. Three friends of the fighters can also go to the hotel."
"Only three?" Capt. Falcon said as he eyed his ten cheerleaders. "Tough choice…"
Phenyl led the fighters to the hotel. It had twelve floors, and each floor was reserved for each person. Once again, Greek architecture ruled supreme. Paula, Jeff, and Poo were waiting for Ness when he reached his floor.
"Some fight. Good thing you fought that pink puffball instead of Bowser, or you would have lost." Jeff said. Ness yawned. He opened the door to his room and suddenly perked up. The entire room was just like his room at home! The desk, windows, floor, everything was the same, except for the view from the windows, which overlooked the gigantic parking lot of starships.
"Ness! Check out my room!" Paula called out. Ness peeked in and saw that it looked just like Paula's room in Twoson. Jeff's room was his dorm room at Snow Wood Boarding School. Poo's room was his throne room from Dalaam. After the surprise wore off they went into each of their rooms and got ready for bed.
Ness had forgotten his pj's but someone had gotten a pair for him. Ness found a dinner of Steak and ate it wholeheartedly. Then he brushed his teeth and went to bed. That night, he dreamt of home and his parents. He imagined that he was having fun exploring a peaceful Onett. He remembered what fun he had had after the battle against Giygas and soon he began to feel a yearning for home.
