Reflections:

The Brave Bee

A grave. It's not something Ness would have expected to find here, in the world that is his mind, a tombstone. Eerie, in this sunny spot, to find something so sad and gray. He kneels before it, bowing his head a little, reaching to remove his cap. He realizes that it's not there, that he's in his pajamas, his dark hair sticking up in all directions. He smoothes a tuft down with his hand and raises his eyes only slightly, his gaze passing over the lettering, reading.

"This is Buzz Buzz's tombstone. He appeared earlier in the game and gave up the ghost before he achieved his goal." Ness's eyes close somewhat automatically, and he lapses back to the past, to that night, that memory.

The sound was unlike any he'd ever heard. The strangest buzzing... a sound no ordinary bee could make. And yet, he couldn't distinguish just what it was that made the sound so unusual... was it the pitch, something about the tone, the vibrations, the way it resonated on the hill? Ness couldn't say. There was no name for the sound he'd heard, the fateful fanfare that would start him on the journey of his life. Buzz Buzz was not a bee, but an extraordinary messenger, one who would enlighten him, explain to him his great purpose.

Ness blinks. It's just like when he heard the news from that little bee, that he was the Chosen One, the boy who would defeat the darkness and restore light to the world. The grand quest was all his, and it was his job, his sacred task to save the earth. Blinking, surprise, shock. How could this be his destiny?

And yet here he is, nearing the end of his odyssey.

Ness is on a journey through his own mind, through memory. He sees his parents, friends and foes he's met along the way, playmates from his past, snowmen he built when he was in grade school. He remembers those glorious snow days home from school, how his mother would bundle him up and send him outside to play with his sister in the winter wonderland in their front yard. He was only a child then... he's a child still, on the verge of his teen years, on a road to adulthood. His whole life lies ahead of him.

But Buzz Buzz's life is over. He catches a tear trickling from the corner of his eye, and promptly wipes his face, whisks the raindrop away. That's how he feels inside, like it's raining, pouring, all full of fog and mist and mud puddles. Buzz Buzz, so courageous and strong and wise, is gone. He will never be again. He exists only in the past, and here in Ness's memory.

He gave his life... for me. So that I might go forth in my quest, and save the world for everyone and everything I hold dear... Buzz Buzz gave his life for a dream, a prediction, a prophecy... so that I might live, and save my home, my world from destruction. How brave, how very noble he is... was... no, is... for Buzz Buzz will always be, here in my mind, and deep in my heart. I owe my very existence to him at this moment, for without his warning, his call to me, I would never have met the other Chosen Ones and embarked on this mission... we would all have succumbed to Giygas, would all be gone and lost. Now, only Buzz Buzz is gone and lost... but never really lost, always with me, always overhead, by my side, my friend, my faithful guide.

Ness sheds another tear, but then no more. He wipes the droplet on the tombstone, then rises and stands back, gazing at the grave. "Thank you," he whispers, not to himself, but to the spirit of this brave bee. "Thank you for giving up your ghost, to save the world... to save us all. Thank you, my wise friend... thank you, Buzz Buzz."
