The Silence

Ness closed his eyes.  It had been a month since the defeat of Giygas, and everything was back to normal.  Everything, except his ability to speak.  Concentrating on the cause of his muteness, he saw an image of his dad holding him as a baby.  Ness decided to ask his dad about it.

He walked downstairs to the living room, where his dad   had just arrived home.

(Dad,) Ness signed. (Why can I not speak?  I was able to once, right?)

His dad looked at Ness.  "There's no need to sign here, your mother and Tracy are gone."  he said telepathically.

"Okay.  But why?"

His dad closed his eyes.  "You know you were not born a mute, it was the price we had to pay to keep the world alive..."

"I guess it all goes back to when I was a kid.  Like you, I had an extraordinary destiny to fulfill.  Soon after the defeat of my time's evil, Giegue, I kept having a reoccurring dream.  A voice said to me, 'It is not over, I will have my revenge upon your son.'  It had scared me, but even worse was that my Great Grandfather's Diary had the same passage.

"I then ran away from home.  Everyone assumed I was dead.  But no matter how far I ran, the dream kept chasing me.  I, too, was a mute since childhood.  The PSI ran on my father's side, and as I soon discovered by reading the diary, so did a terrible curse.

"'Every generation, the battle of good and evil will begin anew.  Good will always triumph, but not without its price.  After I had stolen knowledge of PSI,  they sentenced all of humanity as a punishment.  One of my descendants and one of theirs must face the ultimate evil as their coming of age.  They had placed all hope of the world upon our family.  If we defeated the demon,  then the human race would live for another generation.  But had the evil won, the Armageddon would arrive.  Evolution and civilization would start over, turning the earth into ancient primordial soup once more.  They held that power.

"'However, it was not enough only to place the fate of the world on our shoulders, they also made us unable to use the final tool in destroying them-song.  It is the last step in saving the world, yet we cannot do that part.  Yes Ninten, that is why you cannot speak, sing or laugh.  I am writing this to you, Ninten, only you.  This will seem meaningless to you at first, but you must share this with your son Ness.  He will be the exception. Your father and yourself will regain speech, but Ness has another mission to fulfill.  He must end this curse.  And there is only one way to end it...'

"And that's where it ends.  I moved to Onett and met your mother, and forgot about the whole thing until you were almost 1 year old.  You were a normal boy, until I had that dream, the one that made me change my live.  I woke up in a cold sweat, and ran to your crib.  As I feared, you were no longer able to cry, to laugh, to sing..."

***********************************************************************************************

"Ness!  You destiny is greater than anyone can ever imagine.  You must end this curse by your own hand.  Only then can the earth be saved."

Ness looked at his father, amazed at what he had heard.  "How?"

"Learn the melody of the earth, and sing it..."
