Giygas's Spawn

A Little Reunion

Part 10

Paula couldn’t believe it had worked - Ness had teleported the spawn away from the city! She turned to Jeff with a look of excitement on her face.

"He did it! But, he told me not to come after him."

"We have to! He can’t -"

A scream was heard in the distance. Jeff, Paula, and Poo knew that, before anything else, they needed to help the injured people that were undoubtedly scattered across the city.

As they worked, freeing people from the remains of fallen buildings, Paula felt something tugging at her. She knew that something was wrong. They finished freeing another victim before Paula told Jeff and Poo.

"Well, seeing that the monster’s immense size would create a lot of momentum, it probably shattered upon impact with the ground. That is, if it was still frozen."

"Well, if Ness had defeated it, he would have been back by now to help us!!" said Paula, once again becoming frantic.

"You’re right. We had better go after him."

Poo cleared a small area for them to teleport. In a matter of seconds, they found themselves in Winters.

"Do you believe that Ness teleported here?" asked Poo.

"Yes. I’m sure of it..." said Paula.

Pokey was the first to attack, before Ness even pulled his bat from his backpack. He began pulling levers and pushing buttons. The Spider Mech retracted its legs, floating in the air. It then flew forward and hit Ness, knocking the wind out of him. Ness doubled over, rolling on the ground.

"Hahahah! That was funny! I’d almost pay to see that again!" Pokey mused. Ness slowly got back on his feet. Ness knew that Pokey was just toying with him, and that now was the time to hit him with something hard when he least expected it.

Ness concentrated and envisioned himself using his PSI Omega Power again. It had been a while, and he hoped that he could revive it. Ness closed his eyes, and realized the power of PSI Special Omega. Bright colored rays filled the area, coloring the trees beautiful hues of green, purple, and red. The attack struck Pokey just as he was attempting to set up a PSI Shield. Pokey screamed in agony as the rays penetrated his Spider Mech, heating up the inside of the glass dome. Ness realized that with the glass dome, the type B Gamma rays (which were what PSI attacks were made of) bounced around inside there. Pokey’s little protective shield was now acting as a catalyst for Ness’s attack, cooking Pokey as if he were in a microwave!

Pokey was covering his eyes yelling, and due to the absence of his hands on the controls, the Spider Mech toppled over and shut down (a feature meant for security reasons). Ness almost laughed, but remembered that Pokey was, although very stupid, rather skilled at trickery. This was probably used as a technique to divert Ness’s attention from the battle so Pokey could sneak in a quick hit.

Apparently, Pokey wasn’t faking anything. When he righted the Spider Mech, Ness could see water condensation forming on the glass dome. It must have gotten extremely hot in there; Pokey was completely red. He became furious.

Pokey looked Ness directly in the eyes.

"Bad idea."

Two port holes opened in the front of the machine. Ness watched in horror as the heads of two rockets emerged, and with a spark and a puff of smoke, came whistling straight at him. He dived to avoid the missiles, but only one of them missed. The second one hit Ness’s foot, exploding upon impact. His exposed skin and clothing was instantly littered with shrapnel from the missile head. Ness fell to the ground, almost in shock. He could vaguely hear Pokey’s evil laughing, and everything was blurry and spinning rapidly. Suddenly, he felt himself being lifted off the ground. He soon shook off the temporary disorientation and realized that Pokey was lifting him above the Spider Mech, using the cold, metallic legs as arms.

Pokey laughed again as Ness struggled to free himself. He couldn’t move, the two legs were wrapped tightly around him. Ness fought harder when he realized that Pokey was really going to do him in this time. Ness was being held above a large rock by the powerful legs of the Spider Mech.

Paula, Jeff, and Poo all landed smoothly. Paula looked around, seeing no incriminating evidence of a battle. Then she looked down.

"Guys! Look at the ground!"

On the ground was a huge imprint, the size of the spawn. But nothing else was there, no foot prints, no knocked down trees. Something was wrong.

They heard someone laughing not far away from where they stood.

"Do you hear that?" asked Poo, a deadly serious look in his eyes.

The ground shook as an explosion roared through the dense Winters forest.

"Lets go!! Quick!"

The three listened, and heard more laughing. It sounded like it was just a few feet away. Jeff then ran over to some nearby bushes and parted them. He muttered something, and turned around, pale.

"He’s back."

"Well, Ness, looks like the end of the line for you, neighbor. When you see that weak fool ‘Buzz Buzz’ in heck, tell him I sent you."

Ness closed his eyes and sighed one last breath as Pokey pulled a lever, releasing the legs of the Spider Mech. Ness felt himself falling. He saw a few blue spots, and images of his life seemed to replay in his mind.

He saw his mom when she was younger, sitting in a chair, cradling Ness. She commented to his father on how strange it was that whenever he cried, his bottle seemed to somehow fall right into his cradle.

He saw Frank Fly, working at the hamburger shop with his girlfriend. He saw Paula, playing with the PoleStar Preschool kids on a sunny afternoon. He saw Apple Kid, working on yet another wacky invention. He saw the Runaway Five, lounging in an empty concert hall. He saw a Mr. Saturn, talking with Dr. Andonuts over a cup of coffee. He saw Jeff, in Snow Wood, bowing to an audience of students and teachers as he finished telling of his latest theory on space-time. He saw Talah Rama, meditating. He saw Poo, training rigorously as usual. He saw Dungeon Man, inviting tired tourists in for a rest on one of his many benches. He saw his dad, in a country too far away for Ness to reach, hitting the sack once again after a long day of work.

Everything seemed to begin moving in slow motion. Ness knew that in a moment, his back would make contact with the rock, probably severing his spine. Any second now, he would cease to exist.

Poo burst through the bushes and immediately began attacking the Spider Mech. This would have been expected, save the fact that Poo was attacking with his bare hands. He jumped gracefully in the air, and rocked the Spider Mech with and incredibly powerful flying kick. Pokey was jolted around like a rag doll inside. His head flew forward, hitting one of the many buttons on the control panel. The legs gripping Ness released quickly. Ness fell to the ground, fractions of an inch short of the large rock that otherwise would have been his death. Poo continued his assault on the Spider Mech, putting huge dents into it with his fists. He had a score to settle with Pokey, and his rage was obvious.

Ness opened his eyes, and saw the Spider Mech about to fall on him. He quickly rolled to the right and jumped up, face to face with Paula. The look of relief on her face said it all. She was about to reach out to give Ness a quick hug, when she felt something grab her around the feet. She was pulled down and thrown across the clearing where the battle was taking place. She slammed into a tree, blacking out seconds later. Pokey began laughing once again.
