Giygas's Spawn

Point of No Return

Part 8

Everyone was taken aback when the monster shrieked above them. They felt the incredible heat coming from it. Jeff, as was characteristic of him, began formulating ideas about how to best defeat the beast. Ness grabbed on to his hat and stared in horrific awe as the monster knocked down a two story building in front of them.

As everyone prepared for a battle, Jeff continued thinking.

"This monster is almost 25% larger than it was only two hours ago. The rate of growth is staggering...it doubles its size in a matter of 8 hours! No wonder its breath is so hot...the internal metabolism requires a lot of heat, and even more food...I wonder where in the world it gets all its food from..."

The monster attacked first. It came down hard upon the ground in front of Paula and Jeff with its spiky claw, shaking the entire area. Paula fell down and hit her head on a large chunk of asphalt, nearly knocking her unconscious. Jeff stumbled, but recovered.

Poo jumped at the same time the claw hit the ground, avoiding the ground shaking experience and any subsequent injury. While he was in the air, Poo made a graceful move, pulling his sword from its scabbard. He brought the sword down on the claw of the monster. The exoskeleton of the spawn had one flaw that was immediately obvious to Poo; it didn’t have any protection for the joints. Poo sliced his sword right between where the skeleton of the forearm ended and where the spiky claw began.

With a sickening sound, the claw of the beast was severed, cut off at the wrist’s joint. The monster roared, louder than ever before. Everyone covered their ears, and Ness, trying to stay calm, thought to himself " Wow, this thing must have quite a set of lungs...".

The monster’s forearm was spurting a black liquid, almost like oil. Poo quickly realized that cutting off the claw was a mistake. The ‘blood’ of the spawn squirted out, and within seconds, the pavement and dirt was totally eaten away. The blood of this monster was acid.

Everyone huddled as the monster backed off to a distance of a few hundred feet, recovering from its wounds.

"Poo! That was amazing! But I don’t know if it was a good idea...the monster’s blood appears to have acid in it!" said Paula.

"I see. Well, we’ll have to injure it, not cut it. There has to be a way to hurt this monster without it spraying acid all over us..." said Poo, trailing off.

Jeff set his bag down and began digging through it. He soon produced a strange looking object, somewhat resembling a gun. "Guys, I think I know how to beat this thing."

Jeff held in his hands what he called a Desistor. It was, in essence, a pop bottle with wires and dials all over it, and a handle and trigger.

Jeff quickly explained that, while at Snow Wood, Maxwell told the students of his experiments with what he called "catch liquid". Catch liquid was simply a mix of water and a strange polymer. When it came in contact with air, the polymer used in catch liquid would expand at a rate of nearly 3 feet per second. Maxwell showed everyone by holding up a plate of glass, then putting a drop of the polymer on it. It spread across the whole glass plate in a little less than two seconds, leaving a thin film of the transparent polymer. Maxwell then showed them what happened when water was added to the polymer. Again, he pulled out a plate of glass and put a few drops of the ‘catch liquid’ on it. The strange substance again covered the whole plate in a few seconds, but this time, the whole plate was dripping with water! Maxwell had only thought of one practical use for this substance. He would add soap to the liquid and put a few drops on his car, and viola! An instant carwash!

Maxwell discontinued his experiments, seeing no real application for it besides the car washing. But Jeff was intrigued. He decided that, instead of water, he would mix liquid nitrogen with the special polymer. Jeff experimented with a piece of bread. He dropped some of the mixture onto the bread. It froze it almost instantly. He then picked up the bread and dropped it, shattering it into hundreds of pieces. Jeff then realized that this ‘catch nitrogen’ could be used as an effective weapon against enemies during battle. It was a lot like Paula and Poo’s PSI Freeze, except it lasted longer because liquid nitrogen was so much colder than plain ice.

Jeff had made a special container for the liquid nitrogen, a warped soda bottle. He filled the bottle with the catch nitrogen, and then created a special nozzle. He attached the nozzle to the end of the bottle, creating a sort of gun. The nozzle was the most important part of his weapon: it pressurized the catch nitrogen and set the temperature so the nitrogen could stay colder longer. Jeff set 3 dials on the side of his gun to regulate three important things: How many square feet needed to be covered with the substance, how far it traveled when shot from the gun (the pressure inside the bottle forced the liquid out at nearly 200 mph), and how deeply the layer of catch nitrogen would penetrate. Finally, Jeff attached a handle and a trigger so it would resemble a gun.

Ness stared at the weapon, amazed. "Why is it boiling if its so cold?"

"Well, thats what liquid nitrogen always does. When exposed to heat, like the heat from my hand, it begins to ‘boil’. Put your hands on it." Jeff said confidently, holding out the modified soda bottle weapon for everyone to touch.

"I’ve noticed that this monster must have incredibly high temperatures inside his body. I don’t think this can keep it frozen for very long. But as soon as you freeze it, Jeff, we need to get to work." said Ness, thinking up a quick plan in his head.

Ness explained to everyone that they needed to work together. Poo would have to be ready to use BrainShock in case the monster woke up too quickly. Ness would need Paula to use PSI Freeze on the ground below the monster to make it slippery with ice. Ness had ready in his mind what he was going to do.

Jeff flipped a switch on his gun and it gave a high pitched whine and a few clicks. The special nozzle on the end of the soda bottle snapped shut with a metallic click, and a whooshing sound began. When inquired by Paula as to what was happening, Jeff said that the nozzle was pressurizing the catch nitrogen so he could shoot it from the gun. After every few high-powered squirts of the strange liquid, he would have to repressurize the bottle. If he didn’t, the liquid would just drip out the nozzle, freezing the gun to his hands.

The monster reared its head from a few hundred feet away and began running at them. Although its large size made it look clumsy, the beast moved surprisingly fast. Ness yelled at Jeff to get ready. Jeff set all three dials. The first one he set so at least 1,000 square feet would be covered. The second one he set so the liquid would travel for at least 100 feet before slowing down and hitting the ground. He set the last dial at maximum penetration. Jeff flipped one final switch and nodded at Ness.

When the monster was within nearly 50 feet of Ness, Jeff pulled the trigger on the Desistor gun. The blast of catch nitrogen kicked Jeff backwards, throwing him like a rag doll almost 20 feet from where he had been standing. His head landed dangerously close to a twisted piece of metal from one of the fallen buildings. Jeff looked up to see that his shot had been successful, hitting one of the monster’s many large spikes.

Ness watched in awe as the monster was quickly covered in a thick layer of the catch nitrogen. It tried to roar, but it appeared that the nitrogen had spread part of the way down its throat. The beast began moving slower and slower, until the red glow in its eyes nearly disappeared.

Ness saw his opportunity and began running towards the frost-covered monster. As he ran, he yelled back to Paula to use PSI Freeze Omega on the ground underneath the spawn. Paula concentrated and froze the ground around the monster with a thick layer of ice. Ness slid across the ice and stopped just short of the head of the monster, which appeared to be melting rapidly. He knew he had little time, so he grabbed onto the skeleton-covered arm of the monster, and looked back at all his friends.

They all stared, amazed that Ness was brave enough to even near the monster, and terrified at the thought of him getting killed right there before their eyes.

Paula looked through the smoke. "What are you doing?!?! GET BACK HERE!!!!" she screamed as another explosion rocked the city.

Paula realized what Ness was doing now. He was going to teleport to a frigid climate, like Winters, with the monster. Thats why he wanted her to use PSI Freeze on the ground underneath the spawn. Ness would have to be able to spin the monster around fast enough to teleport it, and the ice made it slippery enough to do so. .

Ness turned, and began PSI Teleportation B. He was pushing on the frozen leg of the monster, running in circles on the ice patch made by Paula. The beast was incredibly heavy, even with the slippery ice underneath it. Slowly, he began running faster and faster. His legs ached tremendously. He knew that this teleportation wouldn’t work unless he worked harder than ever before. His legs were becoming numb now, but he was almost to the point at which he could teleport the huge spawn. There was no turning back now. As he neared the point of teleportation, he sent a message to Paula telepathically:

"Don’t come after me."
