Giygas's Spawn

Part 4

Jeff began to tell everyone of how he and Dr. Andonuts stayed in Saturn Valley for a while after everyone went home. They discussed theories and worked on machines with the Mr Saturns. As they talked of quantum physics (or as one Mr. Saturn called them, puntum quizzics), Jeff slowly trailed off into a whole different line of thought in his own mind: The possibility of this whole ordeal with Giygas not yet being over. Jeff knew, for sure, that Pokey was not around anymore. Jeff noticed something that no one else noticed, right before Pokey disappeared: A large, black chasm was left in the spot where Pokey stood.

During boarding school, Maxwell taught about a few theories of space-time travel. One famous scientist said that there was a force in the universe called space-time. It was speculated that space-time was everywhere. There was not one spot in the entire universe that didn't contain this fabric of the cosmos. This fabric was delicate though, and an extremely large gravitational force could rip a hole in it. The only object with a large enough gravitational force to do that would be a black hole, and those are found deeper in space than man can travel. When a black hole is created, is causes the space time around it to rip, forming what many people call a 'wormhole'. Scientists believe that instantaneous space travel (traveling across the universe in a fraction of a second) and time-travel are made possible when going through a wormhole.

Jeff thought for a long time, and formulated a theory in his mind: The Phase Distorter, which carried them back in time, must have been able to manipulate the power created by black holes and distort it so that time travel is possible. But if the Phase Distorter was using black holes, or wormholes, then it must have been possible that when they went to "The Cave of the Past", they weren't really in the cave of the past. It was just an illusion created by Giygas or Pokey. They may have traveled to a parallel dimension in the universe, predetermined by Pokey, where the same kinds of chemicals made the air breathable. Jeff and his friends may have been transported halfway across the known universe, when they thought they were simply traveling backwards in time! Jeff then remembered the Spheres and the Tentacles they encountered in the cave of the past. They surely didn't look like they were made of any material from Earth...Were Jeff and his friends on the home planet of Giygas??

Jeff presented all of this to his friends, talking in terms that he hoped they could understand.

"So...You believe that we didn't travel back in time...we traveled across the universe??" asked Ness.

"Well...yes." Jeff had a way of hesitating before he said anything that someone might refer to later. It was as if he had to confirm in his own mind that he wasn't wrong...He hated being wrong about things.

"So...That 'Cave of the Past' wasn't a cave of the past? It was Giygas's home planet? It seemed way too small to be a planet" Paula stated, trying to disprove Jeff's theories. She didn't like the thought that they weren't even on Earth when they fought that horrible battle. She was uncomfortable at the notion of traveling through time; but across the universe? That was something infinitely more daunting and scary.

"You see, I think Giygas somehow led us to his home planet via the Phase Distorter. Remember those strange tentacles and spheres we saw when we got there? I think those are used like we use buses: to get from one place to another. Giygas set the path that the spheres took us so that we got to him as quickly as possible. We may have been on a planet a thousand times bigger than our own sun...or a planet the size of Onett! Its really not possible to say for sure. We may not have been on any planet at all...the battle may have taken place in the fourth dimension."

"The fourth dimension??? Man, this is getting way too confusing. What were you saying about Pokey and the black thing he left behind?"

"Well, I think Pokey figured out how to use black holes, the same way Mr. Saturn, Dr. Andonuts, and Apple Kid figured out to use wormholes. That strange machine Pokey was in that looked like a spider was probably his transport vehicle. He may have melded himself with the vehicle, making himself a time travel machine and the right-hand man of evil both at the same time. He probably can't be hit with physical weapons now...time travel is almost instantaneous. He would disappear and reappear behind our backs before we could even get the chance to pull a bat or a sword. Thats why PSI would be the determining factor in a battle against him: the side with the most power behind their PSI takes all."

Jeff now believed that the black chasm he saw when Pokey disappeared was a wormhole through which Pokey escaped. He knew that Pokey couldn't come back to Earth, because creating a black hole on the surface of the Earth would cause the whole Earth to be sucked in. The pressure created by the black hole would cause the earth to densify, becoming less than one-billionth its original size. The earth would be about the size of a football field, everything on it being destroyed and compressed. A human would be destroyed and his particles compacted into a space the size of a single atom. Pokey would be destroyed trying to enter that same hole. That is why the battle with Giygas had to be at a place which a black hole could be formed and traveled through without sucking the rest of the planet in with it. The battle must have taken place on a planet structured to withstand the force of a black hole. Jeff couldn't even fathom the strength needed to keep the integrity of the planet intact.

"Are you saying that we may have to battle against Pokey again?" asked Poo. He was not good at comprehending all of the stuff Jeff was talking about. Poo was very intelligent, but not in the same way that Jeff was. Jeff had the brain of a scientist, a mechanic. Poo had the mind of a theologist. He did understand the principles behind space-time, but not very well.

"Its very possible. This brings me to my main point: I think that we defeated Giygas, but the Giygas that we defeated was not the only one. If you were trying to take over a planet, would you do it alone? Probably not. You would get help, like Giygas did, by taking over the mind of someone so they could help you. But if you were smart, that wouldn't be all you would do. You would clone yourself, like a backup copy of yourself in case you were to be defeated. I believe that Giygas spawned himself, and that red creature you fought with was an underdeveloped form of Giygas. Its the same thing as Giygas: just as evil, just as aware of our presence. There is no difference between this creature and the Giygas we defeated except for three key things: One, it is not fully developed. It was obviously planted deep in the earth to grow until the time came for it to come out. Two, it can't control the minds of other beings...yet. Three, its not realized yet how powerful we are."

"So this red monster is a spawn of Giygas?" asked Paula.

"Yes, and I believe that we must face it as soon as possible. Since it doesn't know how powerful we are, it may have surfaced and started a battle with Ness to test his strength. The being now has an idea of how powerful Ness is, but not the rest of us. Thats why we need to get out of here as soon as possible: its got three more beings to test the strength of, and if it doesn't know, then it won't be prepared when we begin a fight."
