Giygas's Spawn

The Calm Before the Storm

Part 1

Ness kicked a rock in his path. He looked down and saw a splinter lying on the ground, probably from his first weapon, a cracked bat. "Geez," he thought, "things sure have gotten boring. I haven't heard from Jeff, Poo, or Paula in a long time...they must be enjoying the attention they're now getting... I'm still doing makeup homework from my absence at school...Mom is all over me, saying how proud she is of ' her little superhero '...and Dad won't be home from his business trip for another week!"

Ness's thoughts were interrupted when a shadow crossed his path. He looked up and saw the familiar face of Frank Fly. Frank used to be a real loser - He was a gang leader, and back then the gang had a death grip on the city of Onett. The police could barely handle them. Then, after Ness had started his journey....

"Hey Ness! How's it going?"

"I've been better."

"Hmmm. Miss the open road, huh?"

"Yeah, I guess you could say that. Things have gotten so boring around here. Giygas is defeated...Heck, I don't know what happened to Pokey. I'm starting to wish that he would come back so I'd have something to do. I keep expecting to run into some green, decomposing zombie, or a blue-faced hippie."

Ness picked up a stick and tossed it into the nearby forest. He could see his house from here, and became frustrated at his condition. His fighting skills had weakened dramatically. The other day, he had tried to fry a dead tree with his special PSI power, Omega level. He was surprised when nothing happened, and then realized that he was slowly relapsing to the condition he was in before he started his adventure -- his PSI skills were melting away, and he didn't want to lose them. He never knew when he might need them again.

"Well, I guess you could call this culture shock. You visited so many different places, you learned not to get used to anything, because you would have to leave the next day. Now that you're settled back down, you're resisting the instinct to settle down and stay put. You've got an adventurer's blood in your veins."

"Wow," Ness thought. "Frank has really expanded his vocabulary since I first met him. Back then, all he could say was 'yo' and 'punk'." Ness laughed, and then realized that Frank had heard him laugh.

"Whats so funny?"

"Oh, nothing..."

Ness struggled to think of something to say to Frank. He had really turned out to be a great guy, and Ness didn't want to make him mad. He was about to say something when he heard a voice in the distance -- Frank's girlfriend yelling at him to 'get his butt to the hamburger shop!' Frank's girlfriend was a waitress at the hamburger shop where he now worked, and she was very punctual. She always made sure he got to work on time. Frank started running towards the town, and turned around and waved to Ness as he left.

"Great. Now I've got nothing to do and no one to talk to," Ness said out loud. He didn't mind, no one was around to hear him speak. Suddenly, Ness felt a tremor below his feet and saw the earth in front of him begin to move.
