RESURRECTION

Ending E
 --Always Remember

  By James

  Introduction

Resurrection E is an “EarthBound” follow up taken to an extreme, set 30 years after the events surrounding “Mother 2” and the other stories I’ve written based on it. I tried to keep it faithful to the overall “serious” aspects of the game’s story, dealing with a nice new union of teenagers gifted with special powers, signs of the past, and a somewhat forgotten opening from the game’s plot, which created the overall conflict. It was also a memorable event for me as I spent around 24 straight hours completing the final chapters and Endings One and Two. If you haven’t read it, then I’d suggest doing so if you planned on reading any of this wrap up.

     -Characters-

Peter
-The shy, quiet boy with amnesia and a good heart.

Psi Abilities-

Offense
*Shooting Star
-Small mass of powerful white energy that bursts upon contact or upon entering the presence of a group. This attack passes through most shields, and can be ‘charged’ for a stronger effect.
*Psi Fire
-The classic wave of mystical fire.

Assist
*Jade Shield
-A Psi draining advanced psychic power shield which blocks multiple attacks. It resists physicals as well as Psi, and fits almost perfectly around one’s body, allowing the wearer to touch but not feel.

Nyne
-The bold, determined soldier girl with a very kind side.

Psi Abilities-

“And just like that, we’re back here again…”

…..

….

A Mysterious Romance

“No matter how good your imagination, you probably can’t grasp what it’s like to not know who or where you are at the same time. Top that off with being hunted down by a bunch of strange people and you’ve got the beginning of a bad day. It pretty much stayed that way until…well until she showed up.

This girl…this woman…this person who innocently claims to be a lot of things to me—now—is still pretty much only one: A mystery. You see it’s not that I don’t trust Nyne. It’s not that I don’t care for her. It’s not even that I don’t like her. confusion It’s just that I don’t know her. I don’t remember anything. Still. They said that my memory would probably come back in time. I comfort myself by saying that not too much time has passed since, all of that happened, but it doesn’t work for very long.  Just because my memory comes back doesn’t mean that all of my old feelings will. The question is…well the question is kind of obvious. It’s also one that’s kind of tricky to answer.
Do I want them to?”

…Sitting alone someplace high, the teenage boy named Peter breaths in some fresh air, then exhales slowly.

He looks far ahead at the beautiful landscape of his planet, then closes his eyes and continues. Just below him is a quiet temple, and just below it are several steps, accompanied by a deep fog.

Deciding he wants to stop early today, Peter stands up, and slowly walks to the edge. He’s wearing a long sleeved black shirt, grayish pants, and brown shoes. A few seconds later, he drops down in front of the entrance, and turns as a cool breeze sweeps through his dark blond hair.

“…Excuse me…?” says Peter as he enters, calling out to no one and anyone who’s around.

Not getting any response, the boy walks about, looking for his hosts.

There’s still no success a few minutes later.

“…They never…” Peter briefly rubs his thin beard, “…something must be happening there.”

He quietly walks back outside and looks at the tall law enforcement building in the far distance.

  Second Chances

“Well I’ll need a little bit of time to start this.

…Okay. This is your typical boy meets girl story…with a cruel twist or two. I mean, in this line of work I should be prepared for that sort of thing. That’s pretty much rule #1. But it wasn’t that easy when it actually happened. Some say in order to keep yourself from getting hurt you shouldn’t allow yourself to feel too much. I’m starting to believe them. Like I said, ‘girl and boy meet at work, girl and boy like each other, girl and boy like each other more, things are going great personally and professionally…’ and then… loss and then things changed. Then Peter disappeared, no one was sure where to, rumors were flying, I was losing my mind…and just as I was about to let go, the scanners located him. Flying towards Earth after escaping capture. Naturally they came to us, the military assistance division called Rebound. We’re, not exactly soldiers. We’re often called operatives. But we have combat training, and we carry the same government issued communicators as soldiers. Our job is to investigate, assist, or recover. Sometimes all three. I was the first to volunteer for this mission—duh—and I was given strict orders to be professional. Always am. It ended up…much more interesting and memorable than I was expecting…not to mention painful—literally. Now it’s over…at least the mission is. Other things though…well I’m not sure.”

Lying in bed as a touch of sunlight enters her room, the young operative Nyne opens her eyes a bit, then closes them again and pulls a sheet a bit closer. Suddenly, her miniature computer sounds off. The girl takes a few seconds before actually moving…then quickly pulls the sheets away and gets up to answer it.

“…Yes?” she says and types, brushing away a bit of black hair. “……What?!”

  Love Comes Home

“I am not a rebel. Okay, I was a little rebellious but I think there’s a difference. You know there’s something wrong when day after day, you go someplace familiar, and suddenly one day you ask yourself: ‘where am I?’ That’s how I felt at home. I mean my old home. It wasn’t a place that was even worthy of the word anymore, it was…something else. I mean they treated me like a…they treated me like a darn alien. It’s hard to describe. I couldn’t talk to them like I used to. I couldn’t go to them like I used to. I couldn’t live with them like I used to. And that’s understandable. I mean I’ve developed these…abilities. ‘Psi,’ is what it’s called. But I eventually went to the people I could trust, and confided in them about it. That was a mistake. I mean I could handle it. It was weird, it was scary…but I could, feel, that nothing was wrong. I could feel it in my heart. I could feel it in my mind. I accepted this as a gift. Mine, to protect and develop and love and control. But they wanted me to get examined. And I mean examined on a large scale. We’re not just talking about a drive to the doctor down the street here. I know what they really had in mind, despite what they may have said at first. That created conflict and isolation and frustration an overall feeling of hostility and tension I couldn’t simply keep handling everyday. So something happened, and I left, believing that there was no place I could truly call home, and no one in the world I could ever trust or be close to. Boy was I wrong.”

  All’s Well That Ends Well…Right?

“Imagine what it’s like to know one certain truth your whole life, and then learn it’s not what you thought. Actually…you may not want to do that, because it hurts. Nah. It only hurts when it happens to you. I’m not trying to be a pouter, even though I’ve got some right to be. I just felt pulled between my emotions on this one. I mean I got the answers about myself I’d always wanted, but the price was high. betrayal I didn’t hate, but I really needed distance. And just when I felt lonelier than I ever have, and really needed someone—in more ways than one—she was there. We didn’t even know each other, but we quickly trusted each other. That feels…well that just feels amazing. From there things got even more exciting, and by the end of this, this ‘journey,’ everything had changed—except for the good part. But was it really that easy? Is that really all there is to it?”

 -

“You know despite what I’ve heard,” said the girl in the green robe at the doorway, “I don’t see anything wrong with sleeping through the day and getting up late.”

Rich grinned as he watched her give the door a gentle kick while carrying their drinks. “Hmm, me neither.”

Rich sat up and put a pillow behind his back. Yumi sat in front of him.

“So what do you want to do with the rest of the day?” she asked.

“Whatever you want,” grinned Rich.

“Oh?” she smiled. “Well I…” she suddenly stopped, as a strange look came over her face.

“…What?” asked Rich.

Yumi was quiet.

“Are you feeling something?” he said as he put the drink aside and took her hand.

“…No, I…I guess maybe…I mean I thought…”

“…It’s okay,” said Rich, “it’s all right.”

-

“What’s going on?” asked Nyne, far, far away. She hadn’t even put the couple of braids in her hair yet.

“Operative Nyne you can go back home,” said a slightly older woman as they walked.

“Well wait…can…”

The large section of the large building they were in was very noisy and busy.

“…Can I at least know what’s going on first?” said Nyne as she brushed past several people.

“We’ve decided this is a job for soldiers, not operatives,” said the woman with a few files.

“…Do I get to know what kind of job it is?”

“…We’ve detected a vessel heading towards Earth. We think it could be the last remaining forces of Alpha.”

“What? Hold on…” said Nyne.

“But, and I know it sounds cruel, but since this is the moment we’ve been ‘waiting for’—we’ve decided to send in soldiers. Just to make sure this is finished, once and for all,” said the bold young woman.

“But this is Rebound material,” said Nyne, “you all have never—excuse me,” she said passing someone, “you all have never sent one to do the other’s job before.”

“Actually it’s something we rarely, ever do. But we feel there’s not much of a difference with this mission.”

They had reached a higher level of the same busy section at this point, and were walking along a balcony like area.

“…I know what Alpha’s after. I have friends on Earth,” said Nyne. “Let me go in there with you. I need to talk to them about this.”

“You can only enter the office through appointment. Yours has been canceled. You and the other selected members of Rebound can go, home,” said the woman with a bold stare.

“Well they’re just going to have to make an exception,” said Nyne as she moved past.

“…Nyne!”

Still home, Rich tucked a now sleeping Yumi in and brushed a bit through her black hair.

“Miss ‘When I’m up, I’m up,’ ” he chuckled.

After getting dressed, he walked downstairs and stepped outside, looking at the fair city of Onett in the distance. His eyes soon went to the famous crater for a few seconds, then slowly up to the sky.

“I’m well aware of that sir…but this time the stakes aren’t nearly as big as they were before. This is simply about vengeance,” said Nyne. “Those cowards are too afraid to come after us right away, so they’re going for the ones who helped us. It gets more pathetic and sleazy everyday with those people.”

“That’s part of why we planned on ending this in the next few days,” said a male superior behind a desk.

“Why are you interested in a mission when we’ve taken it off your hands?” asked a woman of equal rank. “That’s not what I’d be getting from most of you.”

“Because,” said Nyne as some sun shone in her eyes, “…because those are my friends down there. That’s why they’re going, that’s who they’re going after.”

“Operative, you can’t have a ‘friendship’ with people who live so far away,” said another man.

“I know that…but as I told you they were involved in my mission’s success. They helped Peter and I fight, and we helped them. They’re honorable, worthy allies. I can’t just turn my back and hope for the best like this.”

“…So you’d like to accompany the soldiers on this mission?”

“No…let me go alone sir.”

“That’s ridiculous,” said the woman.

“Nyne…”

“I know it sounds that way, but your policy has always been to keep soldiers restricted to fighting around here, while letting others do the covert stuff. That keeps things quick, sweet, and quiet. That’s why Rebound was created. If you send a bunch of troops down there they’ll do what they’re trained to do: fight the enemy. That way things will get noisy and messy. I thought the primary concern was to avoid doing that to another planet. But if you send me down there, I can pretty much go unnoticed—just like last time—and I’ll quietly intercept the threat.”

“You’ll be alone.”

“…I’m willing to do it that way. Believe me I don’t feel like ever going back to Earth, but in this case I will. These are friends we’re talking about.”

“…You seem to care a lot about them.”

“I do.”

“Yes,” said the woman, “I’ve heard that this one has a big heart…which is why you requested the previous mission on Earth isn’t it? Personal reasons?”

“…”

“…One thing’s for sure,” said her other male superior, “we’re wasting time here.”

The three leaned a bit towards each other and spoke softly.

A few minutes later, they faced the girl. “Okay Operative Nyne…”

Nyne stood in position.

“…Your request for this mission is granted. Don’t let us down, and bring yourself back.”

“Sir,” Nyne nodded, and ran out of the room.

Slowly approaching the Earth’s atmosphere, was a large ship much like the one used before.

“Sir, we’re heading for Onett now,” said a bridge member to the silent captain.

“What?” was one of many things being said throughout the large building.

“She’s going alone…again?”

“…Let the soldiers handle it.”

“That girl doesn’t stand a chance.”

Just outside, Nyne looked back at the not so distant building…then pressed a button on a remote and opened her small vehicle. She stepped inside and sat down in the front seat, closing the door and turning on the ship’s computer.

“…Nyne,” said a soft voice.

“AHH!” After the brief shock, the girl turned around with stunned eyes, and there was Peter, sitting in the backseat.

“…Peter? What, what are you doing here?”

“I heard about the mission from some…’old friends’ at your headquarters.”

“…It’s still your headquarters too,” said the girl.

“No. I’m not on active duty, much as I want to be. I can’t even train—at least not physically—until my memory comes back. But I can still help out in secret.”

“…No Peter, I, I can’t take you with me,” she said, still surprised. “It’s going to be dangerous. You’re practically a civilian. You’re…my…”

Suddenly Peter’s hand touched hers as she clung to the back of her seat.

Nyne looked at him in stunned silence.

“…You’re not alone. I’m here with you,” he said.

Nyne remained quiet, as a gentleness developed in her eyes…and let out a light sigh.

Then Peter let her hand go.

--It happened around 6:00. Without warning, a small group of aliens called Starmen appeared via teleportation in the middle of an Onett intersection. Cars swerved, people ran.

“…

…Rich?” said Yumi as she calmly woke up. Then she slowly got that odd feeling again.

As the Starmen advanced towards the library, they were suddenly greeted by a couple of glowing orbs, which rushed out of the nearby trees. One managed to get over the shock and teleport away, but the others were struck and struck again—as the blue balls of Psi energy rapidly bounced off of them in a blur.

When it was over, three of the elite soldiers were brought to their knees, while one had been eliminated and disappeared.

“…Typical,” said Rich, who ran forth and with a shot of Psi Freeze.

One more alien was eliminated when it connected. Just then, the Starman who had teleported appeared behind Rich. The boy turned around and swung his fist across the alien’s face, following up with a quick shot of Psi Hypnosis. As this happened, Rich heard shots of energy sweeping through the air, and dived to the side without turning around. The red beams slammed directly into the Starman who was dizzy from hypnosis, helping him to the ground.

Surprised he was doing so well, Rich hesitated, then returned fire from the ground with a shot of Freeze. Another weakened Starman was defeated, and shortly afterwards, so were the remaining ones.

Rich stood up, and ran as fast as he could into the city.

“Those ones didn’t seem to have much of a chance sir,” said the pilot of the large, invisible ship in the distant sky.

“As I can see,” said the caped captain standing next to him. “I actually sent them down there as a test. To learn just how strong these humans are.”

“Oh…”

“…This is all…about a test,” said the young captain.

“What’s this all about?” asked Peter in the Earth bound ship holding Nyne and himself. “Rich and Yumi?”

“I think so,” she replied. “I’m just not sure why exactly they’re going after them. Why wouldn’t Alpha try to strike at our people somehow? I mean at first I thought that maybe they were too afraid…but with them you never know.”

“Aren’t they weakened now? Aren’t they nearly gone?”

“Yes, that’s true,” said Nyne. “Ever since the humans defeated their leader all those years ago, they’ve been…fading away. But that’s the consequence of the path they chose: conquest. That’s why our people stood up to them.”

“…Well maybe this is it then,” said Peter. “Maybe these are the last of their soldiers.”

“…Still…it just doesn’t make sense. Why now?” said Nyne.

“…Why did you join Rebound?” asked Peter.

Nyne was surprised. “I…” she brushed through some of her hair. “…Remember when I told you…about what my grandmother told me…about how the bond between two people can be so strong that nothing will break it, no matter what?”

“I remember,” said Peter.

“…My dad was a soldier. He meant a lot to me. He was part of a mission against an enemy…and he didn’t come back. That’s why I was staying with my grandmother at the time...and then I ended up living with her.”

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry I brought it up,” said Peter.

“It’s fine,” said Nyne, not meaning it.

“…What about your mother?” asked Peter.

“She left really early in my life. I’ve met her about three times. We’ve never been close and we’ll never be close.”

Peter was quiet.

“…Can’t abandon those I care about,” said Nyne. “I’m just hoping Yumi and Rich can hold them off ‘till we get there.”

Peter adjusted his black shirt a bit and sat back. “…So, you joined in honor of your father.”

“That and to feel like I was a part of something,” said Nyne. “I mean it was pretty much just me and my grandmother for years. I imagined eventually I’d be close to someone else, I’d dream of it…but at the same time I was afraid to…because sooner or later you always have to part.”

Peter kept listening.

“…It just happens too soon for me,” said Nyne.

Peter was silent.

“So, anyway, now I’m alone again. And this time, I’m going to let myself get used to it,” she said.

There was no response from him at first...then he spoke again: “So what’s our status?”

“…We’re getting there.”

 -

--The door to their home swung open, and Yumi appeared with one of Rich’s open long sleeved shirts on. She locked up, tucked the keys away, and charged down the road as the wind blew in the other direction.

“How is this happening again?” she asked out loud.

“AH!” said Rich as he was hit with a red beam from behind and fell to one knee.

He had been fighting every new Starman that arrived in town, but it seemed they were finally catching up to him.

Rich moaned, “…Where are…those guys with the baseball bats now?”

Glowing thunder struck down directly on every Starman in Rich’s presence. He was just as surprised as they were—but soon a knowing grin slowly came over his face.

The remaining Starmen in the area looked around, and were soon given the same treatment as their comrades. Bolt after bolt flashed down, scaring the on looking citizens and knocking the elite aliens silly.

The thunder stopped, then continued as some of the surviving Starmen tried standing up.

When only one was left, he crawled about, expecting to be struck again. When he finally looked up, he saw the face of a girl…and then the blue flash of mystical ice, before it slammed into him. The Starman disappeared.

A few seconds later, Rich, who was holding himself up on his hands and knees, felt a sudden embrace.

“What happened? Why didn’t you come get me, or call out to me?” asked Yumi.

“I…” he spoke between breaths, “…you were sleeping.”

“Oh you…” said Yumi affectionately. “What’s going on? When did they get back?” she asked nervously.

“I don’t know…just now I guess. I don’t…I don’t know anything else.”

“…Come on…” said Yumi, touching some of his short blond hair and helping him up. “We’ve…man I’m not sure what to do.”

They stood and looked around town, as a few onlookers started emerging.

“We’ve got to lead them away from here,” said Rich. “I think they’re after us.”

“But…where to?” said Yumi. “We don’t want to endanger anyplace else either.”

Rich looked around with a somewhat confused expression.

“Are you sending more soldiers sir?” asked the pilot in the ship above.

“…No. Not right now. They’re too prepared, and they’re more powerful than I was expecting. I can see that the best way to do this is to wait until they’re off guard…like when they’re sleeping.”

“…And where might they be heading?” asked the pilot to himself as Rich and Yumi moved.

“That doesn’t matter…prepare to follow,” said the young captain as his cape swooshed a bit and he moved back to his chair.

Nearly fifteen minutes later, a bus carrying Rich and Yumi, who had not gone back home after the battle, began leaving Twoson.

Then it passed through Threed. Soon afterward, a small craft carrying two other teenagers landed softly, just below a hill beyond the trees surrounding the town.

“That felt a lot nicer than the last time you came to this planet, huh?” asked Nyne.

“…I’m not exactly sure why the ship I was in landed here,” said Peter.

“My guess has always been that you felt your memory slipping away before you could return home, you got nervous, and you tried to make an emergency landing.”

“…Guess that was it,” said Peter.

Nyne paused for a few seconds.

“Okay…” she said. “The craft shouldn’t be detected here…and this new model—which I thought was never going to be finished—shouldn’t take as long to recharge.”

The door slowly opened.

“On to Onett,” said Nyne.

She stepped out, again wearing a long black coat, but no hat this time. Peter followed. After taking just a few seconds to look around, Nyne removed her coat and put it in the ship, pressed a button on the inside, then closed the door. She wore a long sleeved gray shirt, black pants, and black shoes. Peter watched with admiration as she put her black hair in a ponytail, as though preparing for battle. Then she walked past him without saying a word.

The quiet boy followed, and seconds after they passed several trees and twigs, Nyne extended her hand backwards, without turning around.

Peter sped up a little, and slowly grabbed it. Soon afterwards, Nyne stopped, facing him with a smile. Then she took his other hand.

“You thought I was teleporting us?” she asked.

“…W-What?” said a very nervous Peter.

“Gotcha,” said Nyne, just before they began spinning.

The two teleported to Onett.

“Rich and Yumi,” said a shop owner in Dusty Dunes as they entered.

You remembered?” asked Yumi raising her eyebrows and smiling.

“I knew there was something about the two of you,” he said, “but actually I know your names from hearing about how you got the house in Onett and all. You’re semi famous these days. On the road again?”

“Sort of,” smiled Rich. “We were hoping to get another lodging, probably just for tonight, if it’s available.”

“For you guys, of course—half priced.”

-

“Yes sir,” said the pilot of the alien ship, “I don’t know what it could be other than Rebound.”

“And you’ve just now realized this?” said the captain.

“I’m sorry sir. The ship they came in must be a new model, probably equipped with a scrambler. Whatever it is, it’s jamming our radar whenever we get close. There’s no way we can find it without sending someone down there.”

“…No…no reason for that,” said the captain. “I have a better idea. We’ll let them find us.”

“Sir?”

“…The whole purpose of this mission is to get revenge on Rebound.  This was only the beginning of that plan. Now that they’re actually here…time to stop the games. The question is…where are they?”

“Not here,” said Nyne.

“Where do you think they might have gone?” asked Peter, turning away from Rich and Yumi’s front door.

“I’m not sure. My computer won’t be of any help…man I could sure use a good hint or something at a time like this,” she replied.

“…If Alpha is already here then they’ve probably already done something, or they will pretty soon,” said Peter. “What’s a place where we could hear about what they’re up to?”

“…Good idea Peter. We should check into a hotel. That way we can get the news on television.”

“And if something happens in this town we’ll be here…and then when Rich and Yumi turn up we’ll have found them,” he said.

Nyne smiled at him. “You’re going to be a great soldier again.” She started walking.

Peter stood alone for a moment in the yard…then began catching up to her.

Rich and Yumi lay side by side on the cots.

“So what are you so happy about?” she asked with a smile.

Rich chuckled, “Nothing…it’s…just that I’m thinking about what he said at the counter. You know…how you’ve gotten even cuter than the last time we were here.”

Yumi chuckled.

“It’s not funny,” said Rich.

“Oh it isn’t?”

“No. Because it’s true.”

Yumi took Rich’s hand.

“I’m not as cute as you,” she said.

Just as they were getting a little closer, something caught their attention on the radio.

Ladies and gentlemen the aliens have appeared again in Fourside. I repeat, the aliens have appeared in Fourside. All residents are strictly advised to stay inside while the police…

Stunned into silence as they looked away from each other, Rich and Yumi’s thoughts were suddenly of their respective family members, and they became very frightened. Springing up together, they left the small room and said their goodbye to the owner as they passed the counter.

They got outside a few seconds later. A black bird flew over their heads as they walked.

“When…when does this end?” said Rich as they stepped over to the bus stop.

Yumi extended her hand backwards and Rich took it. They waited.

--It was barely dark outside when she woke him. Nyne held Peter’s head with one hand and one of his arms with the other.

“It’s time,” she said seriously.

Peter took a few seconds, then pulled himself up and out of bed.

The two exited the hotel, and looked up at the dark sky before teleporting.

The citizens of Fourside watched in awe, as the face of the young captain appeared on the big screen of the former Monotoli building—still the largest building in town. The few people still trying to get home stopped for a few seconds in the street, staring up at the screen and wondering how the aliens had taken control of the building so quickly. Standing on the very top of the building were the leader and his Starmen, forcing a lone human cameraman to display the announcement.

“Greetings, citizens,” said the captain. “Despite what you may think, this is not about you. Not yet anyway. My business is with another group of people you call alien. Our stop here just happens to be a means…to an end. If I have your full cooperation and you stay out of our way…then no one else need be hurt. Otherwise…well…you need only speak to the ‘security’ we encountered on our way…up here.”

As the captain was finishing his last sentence, a glowing, green unit of energy sped directly at him.

Just before it could connect, a Starman intercepted it with his own body. The energy bit into the Starman, and remained still and visible. A few seconds later, the Signature exploded, as did the alien it was attached to.

“…Who, who did that?!” said the captain.

Then he noticed the two members of his opposing race standing atop a not too distant building below.

Peter and Nyne were very close, as they maintained eye contact with their enemies.

“So…let me guess…it’s the famous Rebound division,” said the captain quietly.

All of the Starmen reacted accordingly, and began firing red beams and their version of “starstorm” at the two teens below.

Peter quickly covered Nyne with a Jade Shield, then himself, and stood in front of her. She was a bit surprised by his actions, and stepped beside him. The two were quickly showered with energy—which was deflected and returned directly to the assailants. It made for quite a light show to the citizens watching below in the streets.

The captain threw his cape up and stepped back, while many of the Starmen who tried to avoid the incoming had moved too late.

After his troops were sent flying, the captain took his frustration out on the cameraman trying to escape.

“You want to leave? Here’s your chance!”

The caped leader tossed the man over the edge of the building.

His fall was very short however, as he saw and felt a green aura around him, holding him where he was in the air. Extending a Jade Fan from her forehead, Nyne slowly pulled the man towards her, and then lowered him gently to the street below. Their shields had dissipated due to the amount of energy.

Afterwards, Nyne and Peter jumped from atop the smaller building, landed unharmed on the street, and rushed towards the entrance of the biggest building in Fourside.

“They’re coming for us sir, what should we do?” asked one Starman atop the building.

“Let’s go and greet them properly.”

Upon entering the renovated lobby, the two teens approached a quartet of elevators. Two on their left, two on the right.

“Which…which one?” asked Peter.

“One’s as good as the other I suppose,” said Nyne.

After they entered one, Nyne directed it towards the top floor, and the doors closed.

The doors opened, and Yumi and Rich stepped off the bus.

“Looks like it’s coming from over there,” said Rich, noticing several police officers on the ground before the large building.

“Oh man…” said Yumi as they arrived.

“…It’s all right,” said Rich, “they’re breathing, see? Looks like most were just hit with Hypnosis. Quick and easy.”

They entered, and noticed four elevators in the near distance. They chose one, and headed for the top floor.

“Take us down a few floors,” said the leader as he and the remaining Starmen again boarded one of the elevators. “They’ll probably get off at some point before reaching the top.”

“We should probably get off at some point before reaching the top,” said Nyne as she and Peter watched the numbers. “They’re probably heading down now.”

“Yeah…” said Peter.

“If they’re still up there they might be heading down now,” said Yumi. “I can…try to ‘pick them up’ with my mind.”

“…Just take it easy,” said Rich calmly.

Yumi held his hand as the elevator moved upward.

Peter and Nyne stopped and exited two floors before the top.

“…You see anything suspicious?” she called as they searched opposite sides of the floor.

“Not yet,” he replied.

“So they aren’t on this floor either,” said the captain far below. “Let’s check the next one.”

“Wait a minute Rich…I think I feel something,” said Yumi as they neared their destination.

“It’s okay…we’re ready,” said Rich as he held her forearms.

“Just where are they hiding?” said the captain as his men headed back into the elevator.

Then the aliens saw the doors across the hall open.

“…Rich!” said Yumi as she saw the group in the opposite car.

“It’s them!” said the leader.

Rich let go of Yumi and launched his Blue Orbs. At the same time, Yumi shot forth a blast of Freeze. Just as the aliens’ door was closing, both attacks made it in. The blast of ice struck down and eliminated a soldier. The orbs connected with one Starman, and then connected with them all. As the soldiers were rocked about, their leader stood back and remained unharmed.

“Good shot,” said Yumi as she pressed a button.

“You too.”

The elevator went up.

“Now where are they going to pop up next?” said Yumi as she began concentrating.

“Stand up! All of you,” said the Starmen’s leader. The soldiers had barely survived Rich’s attack. “We’re about to take them by surprise next.”

“…I’m…I’m picking up something again Rich,” said Yumi about a minute later.

“Okay…I’m ready,” he said, standing close to the door.

“No, don’t stand that close,” said a worried Yumi.

Rich took a step back and suddenly saw a green essence surround him. Afterwards, he turned around and noticed Yumi placing a Jade Shield on herself as well.

“It’s…it’s getting closer,” she said.

Rich balled his fists and stood beside her.

Yumi, who was still wearing one of Rich’s long sleeved shirts, took it off, fully revealing her green tank top, and a medallion hanging from her neck with “E” engraved on it. Then she tied the shirt around her waist and bent down a bit to touch her knees.

“…Wait…it feels…familiar…?” she said.

“…What?” he asked.

Just then, the doors opened.

Nyne gasped and her eyes widened…then she grinned.

“HEY!” said Yumi with a smile, who disengaged the shields around herself and Rich.

Rich suddenly had the same expression.

Even Peter followed suit.

Nyne and Yumi suddenly hugged, and Rich extended his hand to Peter. Surprisingly, Peter gave him a much hipper handshake than last time.

“Uh oh, Peter’s—Peter’s gettin’ cool now,” said Rich to the two girls.

Peter chuckled quietly and watched as Yumi and Nyne separated.

“What’s going on?” asked Yumi. “What’s with all this?”

“We think they came here after you two,” said Nyne, extending her hand to touch Rich’s arm for a moment. “Hey…” she said warmly.

“Hey what’s up?” said Rich touching her hand.

Yumi suddenly embraced a surprised Peter, who returned the hug after a few seconds.

“So what do we do now?” asked Rich.

Suddenly they all heard a ring, and two doors across from where they were standing opened.

“Out! Now!” yelled the alien captain.

All of the Starmen with him rushed out into the hall before the teens.

Peter quickly let go of Yumi and stood before his comrades. Then, a large white mass of shiny energy projected from Peter’s head, and flew across the hall.

The Starmen summoned blue shields for protection. Peter’s Shooting Star flew ahead…and exploded just before touching one of the shields. The powerful burst scattered the weakened Starmen and caused Peter’s comrades to duck and cover behind their arms. Peter stood where he was and briefly closed his eyes. Afterwards, several aliens were seen lying about on the floor…and then began fading.

Then Peter saw a large ball of purple, similar to his own attack, speeding towards him. The quiet boy looked shocked, and managed to slightly put up an arm but not his shield. The attack connected, and Peter was knocked backwards on the ground with a sudden groan.

Rich stayed down and checked on Peter. Nyne also paused with a scared look on her face, which soon turned resentful as she and Yumi charged forth.

The alien leader stood in the elevator as the doors closed. Nyne prepared to launch a Signature…then stopped, as it was too late to hit the target. Yumi’s hands leaned against the closed doors after she stopped running. Nyne turned back to Peter and Rich.

“He’s all right,” said Rich as he helped his comrade up.

As she held the elevator doors, the girl in the green tank top concentrated with her eyes closed.

“… …I can’t pick him up,” said Yumi. “I thought maybe I could find out which way he was heading but…”

“Why don’t…why don’t you two take one direction, and we’ll take the other,” said Peter.

“…That’s a good idea,” said Rich.

“…All right then,” said Nyne as she glanced over at Peter.

“Yeah…I’ll just make contact with you guys if we find him…or vice versa,” said Yumi to Rich.

Yumi and Nyne headed up, Peter and Rich headed down.

After about a minute, Peter spoke. “…So how are things going for you two?”

“Just great,” smiled Rich, letting himself calm down a bit.

“How’ve you been?” asked Nyne with a smile.

“Good,” said Yumi. “You?”

“I’m…I’m doing all right. No big changes,” said Nyne.

“How are things going with Peter?” asked Yumi.

“Is it just like you imagined?” asked Peter. “Is it like you told me you wanted it?”

“Yeah actually,” said Rich as he watched the floor of the elevator.

“You know…during that trip we had to…’Summers,’ or whatever?” said Peter.

Rich slowly smiled as he kept looking downward. “…Yeah,” he said quietly.

“So life with Yumi is just how you envisioned,” said Peter.

“Mm hm,” said Rich quietly.

“She’s nice to be around?”

“…Pretty nice,” said Rich.

“She’s pretty exciting huh?”

“…She’s pretty excited, uh, pretty exciting,” said Rich as he suddenly spoke louder and looked up again.

“So did you and…” Nyne tapped the wall of the elevator, “…your mother and grandmother make up?”

“Pretty much.”

“What about Rich and his parents?”

“Well, he’s still got some issues to work out there…and he’s been kind of reluctant to do that. But he’s really the sweetest person I know. I’m sure eventually he’ll have the big talk with them.”

Nyne nodded and remained quiet.

“See he was staying with both—during different parts of the year. Now that he has a home of his own I think maybe he’s enjoying the sense of independence,” said Yumi.

“I think maybe he’s enjoying being with you,” said Nyne.

“Yeah well…” Yumi wore a shy grin, “we both need each other.”

“…You two sure connected,” said Nyne softly.

“Wait a minute…” said Rich with a smile, “you’re asking me all this because you’re…thinking about Nyne, aren’t you?”

“…I didn’t say that,” said Peter as he looked off.

“It’s just like I asked you in the Phase Distorter…” said Rich. “Remember our talks about destiny, and how Nyne and Yumi look similar, except that Nyne looks almost European?”

“…I haven’t said anything about her here,” said Peter.

“Peter,” Rich chuckled, “what’s wrong?”

“What do you mean?”

“We may not ever get the chance to discuss this again,” he said rubbing through some of his blond hair. “I mean, here’s a girl who…”

The ring came and their elevator door opened.

“Picking up anything at all?” asked Nyne as they neared the top floor.

“…No,” said Yumi, “I have a feeling that maybe he can block me somehow.” She pulled the shirt around her waist so it was a little tighter. “We’d better get ready.”

Nyne adjusted one of the locks hanging from her pony tailed hair, then saw an aura of green flash around her, before shrinking and fitting around her body. Yumi again covered herself with a shield as well, then balled her fists. They both crouched slightly before the elevator opened.

“Nothing here,” said Rich as he and Peter looked around.

Peter rubbed the light hair on his chin a bit.

Nyne and Yumi reached the roof, which was wider now…and there was the alien leader, looking out at the sky by the ledge.

“Tell me who you are, and what Alpha’s up to now,” said Nyne as she prepared for combat.

The leader turned around, revealing his human like face. “Is it really that tough to figure out?” he asked.

“The easy way or the other way,” said Nyne casually as she took a few steps.

“I don’t know what your problem is,” said Yumi as she followed, “but you don’t get to bring it here anymore.”

“My ‘problem,’ you see…goes far deeper than whatever you can probably imagine,” said the leader.

“This guy’s got quite a mouth,” said Nyne.

“Yes, I take that after my father.”

What?” said Nyne with an angry frown. “Who are you?”

“Do you remember my father? He certainly left his mark on your people,” said the captain.

“…Wait…” said Nyne.

Yumi stared at them both.

“…You’re Truit’s son?”

The young leader was silent for a few seconds. “Captain Yen…son of the great Truit.”

Nyne switched her pose a bit, “…So this, this is your way of retaliating? By terrorizing this planet? By coming after friends of ours?”

“That’s part of it, yes,” said Yen, “but this is also about the interference by all of you in our plan. In short I was aiming to make you all feel exactly what I felt, when I was told my father fell against your people in that ambush.”

“…I know what it’s like to lose someone,” said Nyne.

“And next I planned to deliver the news to Rebound, and make a direct strike while you were guilt ridden.”

“Did you hear what I said?”

“…Well then…I’m afraid your personal issues aren’t relevant,” said Yen.

“But yours are?” said Yumi.

Nyne’s eyes were closed as the wind blew both girls’ hair, “I’m sorry for your loss…” she paused, then opened them with a serious look, “but we didn’t start this, your people did.”

Peter and Rich were on their way up.

“Your people began this so long ago…and your leader was defeated here, by humans. How much longer ‘till you let it go? It’s over,” said Nyne.

“…No my dear,” said Yen as he turned, “…It’s far, far from over.”

Suddenly, a large alien ship appeared in the sky behind Yen.

Yumi and Nyne prepared themselves, but even they were shocked when a very large, diverse number of Starmen materialized on the roof around their leader.

Nyne hesitated…then balled her fists. Suddenly she was being pulled from the side.

“Come on this is crazy,” said Yumi.

“The shields are still active right?”

“They won’t last long. There’s not enough room. We’ve got to draw them back into the building and split them up.”

Yumi waited nervously, and Nyne reluctantly moved with her, just as one Starman launched ‘Starstorm.’

As the girls ran, the attack hit both shields, and was deflected into the very large group.

Several Starmen scattered, while others dematerialized out of the way.

“After them,” said Yen, having calmed down a bit.

The Starmen charged forth.

Yumi and Nyne were already heading down in the elevator.

“I’d say there’s about…100,” said Nyne. “That’d be 25 each.”

“…That’s easier said then done,” replied Yumi.

“You hear something?” asked Peter.

“I…think I did,” said Rich.

Their elevator stopped.

“Wait this isn’t the top,” said Rich.

The door opened.

A horde of Starmen stood before them.

Rich’s eyes widened, as did Peter’s for a moment.

The Starmen switched stances quickly and were on the verge of firing into the car.

Peter, acting almost purely on instinct, summoned a shield and desperately charged forth. A beam was deflected as he covered his head and tackled, clearing a path.

Rich quickly hopped over a fallen Starman, then found himself rolling on the floor as he attempted to dodge attacks aimed at him. At some point during one somersault, two large Blue Orbs flew from Rich and into the crowd of enemies.

The Starmen waiting on the top floor prepared to fire when an elevator finally reached it again.

As the doors slid open, the brave group of multiple classes stood right in front of them. However, much to their surprise, they found a group of large, glowing green letters plastered across from them. The letters actually formed two parallel words, which briefly caught the attention of The Starmen, who couldn’t make them out. The message translated, “Your Mama”, and exploded.

Downstairs, Nyne and Yumi heard the blast.

“…Yeah…your handiwork sure did get a few of them. I can feel it,” said Yumi.

Nyne prepared for a group of enemies to materialize at any second.

Peter picked one Starman up by the waist, and pushed him into a nearby group, bringing them all to the floor.

Several others shook about wildly as two more of Rich’s Blue Orbs shot about them in a blur.

Rich swung a wide kick, knocking one Starman out of his way and then aiming Freeze at the DX across from him.

Down below, glowing Thunder struck down on a few of the several which had found Nyne and Yumi.

Yumi aimed again, then felt a quick impact from the side, which sent her stumbling. A blast of Psi Fire was defected by her shield, which now vanished.

Nyne suddenly jumped as high as she could without hitting the ceiling of the hallway, and with a backward swing of her right arm, launched several Signatures—hitting almost all of the Starmen she was aiming for.

The attacks exploded and several others were sent flying. Yumi summoned another shield, as bodies flew towards her.

Then Yumi fired Psi Freeze at another Starman, missing as he dematerialized.

Just as he regenerated, the alien felt a strong aura about him. Nyne swung her Jade Fan, and sent the Starman flying into a few of his comrades on her other side.

On the other floor, Rich launched a shot of Freeze at an enemy very close to Peter, stopping him just in time.

Peter ran beside Rich, and after a few seconds passed, fired a powerful Shooting Star into the crowd before them.

Yumi sent a Starman up against the wall with a strong blast of Freeze, which put it out of battle a few seconds later.

“That’s it, let’s head for the roof again,” said Nyne stepping towards an opening elevator.

Yumi quickly followed.

The two boys stepped back from the small explosion caused by Peter’s attack.

Nyne and Yumi heard some of the blast in their car. Yumi turned to Nyne…then leaned on the side wall with her right arm, lowered her head a bit, and concentrated.

“Rich…”

“Yumi?!”

“Are you guys all right?”

“Yeah we’re just…men at work here.”

“You silly thing.”

“You should have seen how I got one of them. Where are you two?”

“We’re on the way up to get the leader again so just, hang in there. …We’re almost there now.”

“Uh, we’ve got some company down here, gotta go. We’ll be there as soon as we can. Be careful.”

“You too. Later.”

Yumi stood up straight.

“Are they both all right?” asked Nyne, straightening up as the last of an Aura healed her wounds and dropped her the few inches back to the floor.

“Yeah,” smiled Yumi. “How’s that shield I just gave you?”

“Think it’ll function for one more hit. Don’t worry about me though. Let’s just focus what we’ve got left on Yen.”

“Fine with me,” said Yumi.

“Unless you need to be healed.”

“No I’m doing all right,” she said, adjusting the shirt tied around her waist.

“Good dodging back there,” grinned Nyne.

“Thanks,” Yumi winked as her medallion swung a bit.

The elevator slowed…and the door opened.

-

A blast of ‘Starstorm’ threw Peter backwards, while a stunned Rich was protected by one of Peter’s shields.

Rich rushed forth, preparing to take the fight to his enemies physically while he was protected.

Peter was still on the floor with his arms outstretched.

A blast of Thunder appeared above him and came crashing down.

Peter summoned a Jade Shield just before the attack connected. The shield was nullified. Peter slowly rolled on his stomach and pulled himself up.

Just as another attack was about to be launched at him, Rich tackled the Starman, soon firing Freeze at another from the floor.

Peter turned around…and rushed back into battle with Psi Fire.

A Final Starman was propelled backwards in an icy coating on the roof…soon followed by a shadowy one who stumbled about with a glowing green mark of energy. The Signature exploded. Both Starmen disappeared seconds later.

Nyne and Yumi, tired and determined as ever, appeared before the leader who had witnessed his soldiers’ ends just a moment ago.

Below, Peter swung a strong right hand, followed by his left, and finally thrust his enemy backwards a few steps with both palms.

Pulling himself up, Rich watched.

Seconds later, Peter fired a final Shooting Star at the Starman DX…which connected. The advanced soldier held a stunned pose…then disappeared moments later.

Peter breathed where he was, grasping the back of his neck a little and looking back at Rich.

Rich continued catching his breath…then smiled a bit as he stood up.

“Take my word for it, you’ve got very few, if any, soldiers left,” said Yumi as she stepped toward Yen.

Nyne stepped just ahead of Yumi, holding her back somewhat. “As I think I already said…it’s over.”

Yen faced them in silent anger as a strong wind blew.

“Did you hear me this time?” asked Nyne. “Your best option is to surrender your ship and turn yourself in for interrogation.”

“Too bad I don’t agree,” said Yen. He changed his pose suddenly.

Nyne and Yumi crouched a bit and prepared for combat.

Then Yen slowly turned…and ran the short distance to the edge of the largest building in Fourside…and jumped off.

Yumi was in shock. Nyne looked a bit confused, then appeared to realize something and charged after him.

Yen fell through the air, before a yellow beam shot down out of the sky directly on him.

Yumi stopped running and stared in awe.

Peter and Rich thought they could hear a familiar humming in the distance.

The beam, which was at full power, quickly lifted Yen into the invisible ship.

Nyne arrived close to the ledge, drew back…and launched a powerful Signature, which ended up hitting the ship instead. An explosion tore through the sky, and the ship flashed into vision for a few seconds, then faded out again.

Then the two girls felt and heard a loud swoosh, and the ship was gone.

“Yeah…cowards…” said Nyne.

“…Yumi?” said a voice in the girl’s mind.

“…Rich,” she replied telepathically.

“What’s going on? Are you all right?” he asked.

“…Yeah…” she replied, “…just a little tired.”

“Tell me about it.”

Peter leaned and held his knees as the elevator went up.

The girl called Nyne was holding the ledge and looking into the night sky.

 -

--A bit later, the four checked into the local hotel. Although the owner had been a bit hesitant about letting them stay, a small bit of persuasion swept that under the rug.

“…I hate doing that,” said Yumi.

“No, no,” said Rich, “it’s like you told me. You’re not abusing your power. We’re staying here to look after the city.”

“Yeah…but that was my last time. …Well I’ll…see you in a few minutes,” she said with a hug. “Hope everything goes well.”

“Yeah me too, for you I mean,” he said. “…And since you know what happens every time we stay at a hotel,” he winked.

Yumi laughed, “No…no battles this time…please.”

Soon Rich was talking on a phone in the lobby—which temporarily allowed for a little bit of privacy. Yumi was talking on a phone in their room.

“…Hi…” said Rich after his uncle picked up.

“…Hey. It’s me,” said Yumi to her grandmother.

Peter was sitting in the hotel dining room, enjoying a drink courtesy of his A.T.M. (All Technological Markets) card.

Nyne was sitting in a room, silently sipping tea as she popped open her mini computer.

“-Mission In Progress

 -Contact

 -Motivational Message

 -History And Principals

 -Nyne’s Stuff”

Having already made contact, Nyne selected a different one while drinking her tea and watched the screen change:

 -

“And just like that, we’re back here again…

What we do is called the right thing, and if you’re going to keep it up, you may need to address what that means to you…

Honor, Justice, Vengeance, Responsibility…there are many reasons people fight…

Define your own and believe in it during battle…

Rest now, begin again, complete your mission, and come back safely…

Rebound
-Investigate, Assist, Recover”

Nyne set her computer aside…then rested her head on the desk and covered it with her arms.

Then she heard the door open slowly…and there was Peter.

“Hey mom,” said Yumi in Japanese. “I just…needed to know you were okay.”

“We’re fine here. Are you all right?” asked the woman on the other end.

“…Yes I’m…I’m cool,” sniffed Yumi.

“We miss you a lot,” said her mother, “I got a call from your father and he asked about you.”

“Oh yeah?” said Yumi as a tear came down her face.

“You’re supposed to be calling me more buddy,” said Rich’s uncle.

“Yeah well…” Rich laughed.

“I call there again and again and I can’t reach you.”

“Well we’re probably working you know? If you’re calling during the day,” said Rich. “…Yeah Yumi’s fine.”

“This one isn’t even going to get as far as the last,” said Yumi. “I think we’ve pretty much stopped them.”

“I should’ve known,” said her grandmother warmly.

Yumi paused, then chuckled a bit.

“Your mom called me and said she wanted to meet Yumi,” said Rich’s uncle.

“Really? Yeah I’d…like that sometime too,” said Rich.

“I thought you were going to hang out by the pool,” said Nyne.

“No I…I changed my mind,” said Peter casually.

“You can if you want to,” she said getting up, “I’m not lonely.”

“…Are you going to go?”

“Where—to the pool?” asked Nyne.

Peter nodded.

“…Maybe if I’d brought my swimsuit,” said Nyne as she sat down on the bed.

“…Hmm…” said Peter to himself quietly.

Then he hesitated…before stepping over and quietly sitting down next to her.

Nyne kept looking at the floor with her head hanging low.

“You look tired,” said Peter as he glanced at her. “Is the time change getting to you?”

“Nah!” said Nyne quickly and carelessly, “…I’ve got no right being tired right now.”

“Yeah you do,” said Peter, “you’re one of the top operatives.”

“Hmm…that’s nice of you…” said Nyne.

“It’s true isn’t it?” he said facing the floor.

Nyne was quiet.

So was Peter as he kept looking downward. Suddenly, he felt her body gently touch his from the side.

Peter slowly reacted by wrapping his arm around her for support. Nyne quietly woke up…but relaxed upon realizing the situation. She closed her eyes again. Peter, who hadn’t realized, turned a bit red as he held her…then breathed a bit, and settled down. He looked at her head, watched her breath, and thought about his earliest memories of her. And then he started feeling a great deal of compassion. Peter felt his chest and nose getting a bit warm, and a tear forming in his right eye.

And then, Peter bent down a bit, adjusted Nyne’s head, and brought his cheek next to hers.

“You’re my best friend,” he said calmly.

Tears were forming in Nyne’s closed eyes.

“…You always will be,” he said.

Peter’s tear rolled down his face, and touched the one on Nyne’s.

Suddenly a thought came to Peter, and he started to chuckle.

…..

….

“…”

…Then he stopped.

“…I remember…” he said slowly.

Nyne calmly opened her eyes.

“…I remember that day…” he said.

“…Peter…” Nyne said with a surprised look, pulling herself up a bit.

Peter was in silent shock as his eyes wandered.

Nyne touched his face with both hands.

“What do you remember Peter?” she asked.

“The day…I was accepted into the service. You were there…” he said, “…you were accepted too.”

“Yes, I was,” said Nyne with an excited smile. “We both dreamed about it together.”

“And…and later we…”

Nyne was quiet.

“We went out to…to a park,” said Peter as he frowned a bit.

“It’s okay, it’s okay don’t try too hard,” said Nyne taking his hands.

The door behind Peter slowly opened, and Rich and Yumi quietly stepped in.

Peter turned to them quickly, then turned back around.

“Then…when we were sitting down…and talking…” said Peter.

Yumi and Rich listened in quiet confusion.

“You said something…” he continued. “You said… ‘This…this…’ ”

“ ‘This isn’t just about what happened today,’ ” Nyne spoke quietly, “ ‘this is truly about what’s happened in the past, as well as the present. From now on the only thing I’m sure of about the future…is that I want to spend it with you.’ ”

“And then…I…I said…” Peter stopped.

“…And then you said something even nicer.”

Peter blushed.

“I can’t…” he wasn’t crying anymore but he sniffed a bit, “I can’t remember anything after that part.”

“That’s okay,” said Nyne as she touched his face again, “that’s the best start I could ever hope for.”

In a moment witnessed by two others, Nyne hugged Peter, and the quiet, stunned boy returned the affection.

Rich and Yumi looked at each other with soft grins…then quietly exited the room, and entered their own.

 -

 -

--Lying in bed as a touch of sunlight enters the room, the young operative Nyne opens her eyes a bit, then closes them again and pulls a sheet a bit closer. Suddenly, her miniature computer sounds off. The girl takes a few seconds before actually moving…then quickly pulls the sheets away and gets up to answer it.

“…Yes?” she says and types, brushing away a bit of black hair. “……What?!”

After about half a minute…Nyne smiles.

“Yen went back into space?” asks Yumi a bit later.

“That’s right,” says Nyne.

“And your superiors are sure they got the right guy?” asks Rich.

“They’re sure,” says Nyne, “after I reported what happened they were waiting for him.”

“…The mission’s over,” says Peter, “the struggle’s over.” He took a few steps and looked out at the great city of Fourside, “The Earth can live in peace, without having to worry about invasion anymore.”

“The two of us can get the word out,” said Rich.

“Yeah we’ll just let City Hall know later…and they can relay it to the public.” Yumi paused, “…So um…what about you two?”

“Well we can leave now,” said Nyne after letting out a deep breath.

“I wasn’t talking about that,” said Yumi quietly with a grin.

“Don’t go so soon,” said Rich. “Come back to the place. Stay and have breakfast with us.”

“Yeah,” said Yumi.

“Or we could take you to the bakery up the street,” said Rich.

“That’s okay,” said Nyne. “I mean now that the mission’s officially over we have to hurry and return.”

“Come on it’ll only take a little while,” said Yumi. “You two have done so much for us and our world, I mean…”

“You’ve done a lot for us too,” said Nyne.

“How so?” asked Rich.

“Trust me,” said Peter, “…you have.”

“…Well then, let us do one more thing,” said Yumi as she wrapped her arm around Nyne’s back. “Come on you’re gonna love the bread and cottage cheese special.”

 -

Afterwards, Nyne teleported the group back to Onett, and Rich and Yumi turned to face their friends in front of the house. Peter gave Rich the same handshake as before, and the two went into a quick hug right after it.

“Take care bro,” said Rich.

“You two,” said Peter.

“You better take care of yourself,” said Yumi as she hugged Nyne tightly.

“Don’t worry,” said the girl returning the affection.

Nyne held the back of Yumi’s head for a few seconds afterwards, then reached over and embraced Rich.

“Really…take a vacation soon or something,” said Rich as he hugged her.

“I plan on it,” she laughed.

“Come here you,” said Yumi to Peter.

Peter hugged her back, then held the girl’s arms with a smile afterwards. “You two keep making each other happy,” he said.

“Don’t worry about that,” smiled Yumi.

“So you’re pretty sure there won’t be anymore attacks?” said Rich.

“No…we’re pretty sure it’s over,” said Nyne. “…I mean sorry to disappoint you Rich…”

Yumi burst out laughing a little as she tugged a bit on Rich’s shirt, pulling him a little closer.

“…But it’s over,” smiled Nyne.

Peter grinned a bit and shyly looked away.

“…Okay then,” said Nyne with a sigh. She slowly turned to Peter, “…Ready?” she asked smiling.

“…Ready,” he said, returning the expression.

Nyne extended her hand…and Peter took it.

“Goodbye. Take care,” said Nyne to Yumi and Rich.

Peter waved to them both, as did Nyne, and the two standing together in the doorway waved back with admiring grins.

Nyne and Peter teleported…and arrived at the ship in Threed.

Before entering, Nyne looked back and stared at Peter for a moment, then touched the thin hair on his chin with a smile.

Peter grinned, then looked at the ground shyly and chuckled.

They entered the ship…and minutes later, the two teens set off for their home world.

A few more minutes later, Rich and Yumi watched from a window upstairs…and sure enough, noticed something that looked like a shooting star speed into the distant morning sky.

Yumi rubbed Rich’s shoulder and gave his head a kiss, then closed the curtain.

 -

Much later, Nyne and Peter arrived on their home world.

A Mysterious Romance

“We’re all probably looking for that certain someone or something. The lesson, I’ve learned: if that’s the case, don’t turn away when they’re right in front of you. Or, don’t turn away when it’s right in front of you. My source for answers about myself…and my secret yearning for companionship—the ‘solution’ was all in one ‘package.’ contentment I’m remembering more almost everyday. No matter how good your imagination, you probably can’t grasp how exciting and enjoyable it is. And I’ve got someone to share the experience with. Not just because of my past with Nyne, because I want to, based on the present. This experience…and many more to come.”

“Things are good. Things are really good. I mean, the mission went smoothly, we saw our friends one last time, and they’re doing well. The Earth’s doing well. Everyone I care about is doing well. Including me! Oh it feels good to say that. recovery I’ve been opening my heart to other friends lately as well. I mean, even if—and that’s quite an if—I hadn’t ever found Peter, I’d still be okay by now. But I’d also probably be alone. Thankfully, that’s not the way things are. Not anymore.”

  Love Comes Home

“We live in a complicated world, and we don’t need alien invasions screwing it up any further. –Outty. Wait, wait. That’s not it. Of course that’s not it. I’ve learned so much about myself through these experiences. I’ve become stronger and felt better about myself overall. Especially since I was able to do what I wanted to do—use my power for the good of others. We all did. Youth, companionship, adventure…it’s been an incredible ride and we’ll always remember. I also got a great new home, and met a very special guy. peace I feel that Rich and I would have met that day, or eventually, no matter what. But the sooner the better. I can’t wait to finally introduce him to my family. Yeah, my family and I are tight again. My first family that is. Now, I have another one.”

  All’s Well That Ends Well

“Well that was a nice little adventure. I mean, there were no human casualties, the aliens were driven away for good, and we got to reunite with two of our friends for a short while. Things are also going nicely with my uncle and my mom…and she says she might even be able to get in touch with my dad. Just another person I’ll probably want to patch things up with, eventually. I mean at the end of a journey like this you’re probably supposed to learn things, and you’re probably supposed to be closer to certain people. satisfaction  That’s adventure. That’s the name of the game. And I actually am closer to a certain someone. A certain someone I’ll always be close to. Always. But Yumi and I won’t need this kind of adventure anymore. We’ve got one called a future to embark on. And hey—the future is now.”
