RESURRECTION E –By James

-Ending One
E is for Earthbound

“All right then…we’ll do it,” said Rich.

The girl at his side strapped on her jacket, then her backpack, and prepared herself. “…All we have to do is take down Kurtus right?” asked Yumi.

“Don’t underestimate him,” said Nyne.

Peter was silent.

“I’m not,” said Yumi.

“She just means…if we win this, will it all be over?” asked Rich.

“Yes…and it’s when you win this…not if,” smiled Nyne.

“When,” said Yumi.

“…All right then…ready?” asked Rich.

“If you are,” said Yumi.

They boarded the Phase Distorter 4.

“Hey,” called Peter before the door closed, “…be careful.”

“Thanks,” they both called.

Peter handed Nyne her miniature computer. The girl looked at him as he walked away in silence.

“Now you’ll feel a bit lighter at first,” said Rich, “but just relax. It’ll be okay.”

A smile slowly came over Yumi’s face in the backseat. “This is…kind of exciting,” she said. “I haven’t felt this way…I haven’t had fun like this in years.”

“…Neither have I really,” said Rich. “I’m glad it’s you with me this time.”

Yumi grinned.

“I just hope it doesn’t have that…” Rich suddenly felt lighter, “problem again.”

“…Whoa!” said Yumi in reaction to the sudden feeling.

Within a few seconds, the Phase Distorter disappeared before the eyes of everyone in Saturn Valley.

It reappeared in a white mist. The installed life preserver had protected Rich and Yumi from harm.

Both were speechless at first as they looked around the still, quiet area.

“…Rich,” said Yumi, “there’s an entrance back there.”

Rich turned around and looked through the back window. He saw a white cave with a thin entrance.

“This must be…where it’s going to happen,” said Yumi.

“…Well our job is to make sure everything goes according to plan,” said Rich.

“What was the name of that alien they beat? Geegas…Googi?” asked Yumi.

“I don’t know, something like that,” said Rich.

“…So where could Kurtus be?” asked Yumi.

“Let’s see…if I were trying to stop someone from making an important trip,” said Rich, “I’d want to take them by surprise.”

Yumi closed her eyes.

“…And,” said Rich, “I’d want to be able to spot them early.”

“Rich,” said Yumi, “he’s up there.”

“…Man you telepaths,” said Rich.

“I can ‘hear’ him thinking.”

“Okay,” said Rich, “they installed some flight abilities on this version, thankfully, so lets just…” Rich began pressing buttons and reading menus.

Within minutes, the Phase Distorter version 4 began to hover.

“Oh…okay…now, I’m scared,” said Yumi as she clung to whatever she could.

“It’s okay Yumi,” said Rich, “this…this is great,” he smiled.

The craft rose slowly into the upper fog…soon gaining the attention of someone as it hovered.

“Rich!” whispered Yumi. “There he is! I think that’s him!”

Rich and Yumi spotted a white haired, caped man, dressed in the same colors as Peter. He held a long weapon of some sort…and suddenly aimed it at them.

“No!” yelled Yumi as a blast of thunder struck down out of the sky and connected with the weapon, which shattered afterwards.

“I was aiming for him…” said Yumi.

“Hang on,” said Rich, “we’re landing.”

As the Phase Distorter maneuvered and dropped down, Rich and Yumi noticed another one nearby…a larger one.

“…The one he came in,” said Rich. “The one they got from here.”

“…Be careful Rich,” said Yumi as the door opened, “Melva was really strong.”

After a bit of hesitation, Rich and Yumi charged forth into the mist. As they ran however, a swirling batch of stars flew their way.

“Oh that’s just great,” thought Yumi.

Before she could summon her shield, the attack connected with both teens, sending them back in pain.

“I’ve…about had it with pain today,” said Yumi.

Rich pulled himself up, and launched a powerful blast of Psi Freeze into the mist. Kurtus couldn’t be seen, and the blast didn’t appear to connect. Rich turned, and launched another shot. The result was the same. Rich and Yumi looked at each other for a few seconds. There was silence.

Suddenly, a purple shot of energy, similar to the attack Melva had used on Yumi, connected with Rich from behind.

“Ahh!” The boy was sent rolling.

“How did he…?” thought Yumi.

She soon noticed a similar blast speeding towards her. Yumi’s shield was faster though, as it deflected the attack. There was no scream afterwards however, as it flew back into the mist.

Yumi summoned bolt after bolt of thunder, sending them down relentlessly for a little while into the mist before her. When she stopped, there was still no sign that Kurtus had been hurt.

“Oh this shouldn’t be so hard it’s just one guy,” said Yumi rather quickly. She concentrated, and searched for Kurtus with her mind.

“Yumi!” called Rich.

Yumi turned around, then noticed a silent blast of thunder coming down on her.

The attack deactivated her shield.

Rich looked around, preparing to strike, but couldn’t find Kurtus.

“That power he’s using…it’s not Psi It’s…emulating it.” said Yumi. “Where are you huh?!” she called. “Come on out coward!”

“…Since you asked,” said Kurtus as he appeared a few yards before Yumi and launched another blast of purple.

Yumi barely managed to dodge it, and sent a quick blast of Psi freeze at her enemy.

A shield appeared around Kurtus, protecting him from the attack. From the short distance, Rich slung his bat, which also bounced off of Kurtus’s shield.

Yumi took a few steps back.

“Isn’t it obvious that you’re outmatched here children?” asked Kurtus.

“Nah…” said Yumi, ”see I just didn’t want to be too close when…” psychic thunder hit Kurtus, eliminating his shield, “that happened.”

With a face full of anger, Yumi launched one of her more powerful Freeze attacks, which connected with an unprotected Kurtus. The attack knocked him backwards in a daze.

Rich launched his Blue Orbs, which caught Kurtus off guard, and hammered him repeatedly.

Rich kept running until he reached his bat. After picking it up, he approached Kurtus, who opened his eyes just in time to watch as Rich got in a good swing. Kurtus was sent to the ground.

“Yumi!” yelled Rich. “You’ve got to destroy that other one,” he said pointing to the larger Phase Distorter, “I’ll take care of him.”

Yumi hesitated, then ran towards the Phase Distorter Kurtus had used, and began launching several bolts of thunder into it.

“No!” yelled Kurtus as he sprung up.

Rich launched a blast of Freeze. Again Kurtus was devastated.

Yumi continued her assault, starting to run low on Psi. Suddenly she called out to Rich with her mind, who stopped concentrating on Kurtus and ran over to join Yumi. With some of his last remaining power, Rich sent Blue Orbs into machine, which had really begun to sparkle and crack at this point.

“…Get down!” said Yumi as she turned and noticed another purple shot approaching.

As Rich and Yumi avoided the attack, it struck the Phase Distorter they had been trying to destroy, doing even more damage.

“Let’s move,” said Rich as they stood up and he ran hand in hand with Yumi.

“No…what have you done?!” yelled Kurtus as he approached the white machine. “I must…save it,” he said as he opened the door and boarded.

Rich and Yumi watched from their own Phase Distorter.

“Got to stay back,” said Yumi.

“…Think we’ll be able to find him?” asked Rich.

Just then, the Phase Distorter holding Kurtus exploded.

Rich and Yumi got down quickly. When they looked back, all they saw was the last of the forever damaged machine falling over the edge into the white mist.

“…The other one,” said Rich as he clutched his bat, “Nyne said to leave it.”

“I remember,” said Yumi, “she said that the kids here don’t use it to return…but if we destroyed it then everything that’s taken place…everything over these past few days…could be changed.”

“Yeah,” said Rich, “even though Alpha’s whole plan would have never happened…and that’d be good…other things would be different too.”

Shortly after boarding their machine, they noticed movement below as they hovered.

“Oh Rich!” smiled Yumi. “That’s them, they’re going to make it!” she said pointing to four robotic figures. “That’s a sign that we’re making the right decision.”

“Yes…they are going to make it,” grinned Rich. “…Thank you,” he said to them quietly.

“We did it Rich,” said Yumi as she reached forward and brought her arms around the boy in the front seat, “and Nyne’s right. We shouldn’t try to prevent this thing entirely. We’ve done our part, everything will be safe…and we deserve the present that exists. I know right now that I wouldn’t have it any other way. I think this is all…destiny or something.”

“Yeah,” he smiled. “Now lets let destiny take its’ course and get out of here.”

“Exactly what I was thinking,” said Yumi.

Rich adjusted the controls, pressed the most important button, and a few seconds later the Phase Distorter escorted the two teenagers home, where they joined their comrades in Saturn Valley.

“Oh you guys were great!” said Nyne after hearing their story.

Peter smiled.

Rich and Yumi were holding hands again.
“So then…are you two really leaving?” asked Rich.

“Yeah we’ve…got to,” said Nyne as she looked at Peter.

“Yeah…you’ve got to go home,” said Yumi with a slight smile.

“Oh…I know things will work out for you both,” said Nyne. “Don’t rule out going back home to Fourside. There are people who care for you there…and it’s about time you let them know what’s going on.”

“…I know,” said Yumi, “I just…”

“…Come on,” said Nyne with a smile as she stood up. “Bye Mr. Saturns!”

“Bye-bye!!!” could be heard all over the valley.

“Thank you!” yelled Rich and Yumi.

Nyne teleported the four just outside of the hospital in Onett.

“What are we…oh right, the ship,” said Yumi.

“Now just wait a second here…” said Nyne as she teleported away.

Moments later, she arrived overhead in the small ship she had used to travel to Earth…and landed.

“So you really placed their big ship in the water over there?” asked Rich as he looked past a small house in the distance.

“Yep,” smiled Nyne, “fit perfectly.”

“Hey!” yelled someone from the distance.

All four turned.

“…Aren’t you the girl who was fighting those aliens earlier?” he asked when he arrived.

“…Yes,” said Yumi, “and this is the girl who helped me at the end.”

“Oh well…the mayor is looking for you both,” he said to Yumi. “He wants to reward you…with a house.”

“…A…a house?!” asked Yumi.

“Yeah a free house for your courage and determination in defending Onett. He was really impressed with you. Stop by City Hall okay? Gotta’ go.”

He ran off.

“Well, well,” said Nyne, “didn’t I tell ‘ya?”

“Did you hear that Rich?” said Yumi as she grabbed his hands. “We’ve…found our home!” she said getting excited.

Peter grinned as he looked at them.

Rich chucked…and gave Yumi a hug.

“Oh…YES!” shouted Yumi.

“Hey, let me get mine,” said Nyne as she wrapped her arms around them both. “Congratulations.”

“Thank you,” said a tearful Yumi.

Moments later, Nyne was using the beam from Alpha’s former ship to hoist up her smaller one. Soon enough it was loaded and there was only one last step left.

Rich walked up to Peter and extended his hand. Peter shook it, and eventually smiled.

“Hope you make a better driver than pilot,” said Peter.

Rich laughed, “I can tell…you’re going to be all right.”

“Take care of yourself,” said Peter as he shook Yumi’s hand.

“You too,” she smiled, “and take care of Nyne as well.”

“I will,” he nodded.

Peter stepped under the invisible ship, and was soon gently lifted by a beam of yellow light. He stared at Onett and smiled on the way up. Then when he was inside, the door slowly closed. He took his seat beside Nyne…and the two teens set off for their home world.

“Well, well.” said Rich as he and Yumi walked to City Hall, “…Did you know that this, Onett, is where it all began…I mean 30 years ago?”

“Yep,” grinned Yumi.

“…I like this city,” he smiled.

Later on in the evening, Rich and Yumi had switched off the TV, and were enjoying a little relaxing music in their new home—an award from the city of Onett, which they were both welcomed into with open arms.
It was a nice, big place—set apart from the sounds of the city, located up the road just past the library.

Yumi hung up the phone. “Well I, talked to my Mom…and my Grandma,” she said.

“And?” smiled Rich.

“And we’re going to try to work things out between us,” she grinned. “But I told them I am not moving back there. We’ve both still got our jobs, there’s no rent…so we’ll be okay.”

“Things pretty much went the same between me and my…uncle—man I’ve got to get used to that,” said Rich. “He’s even going to deliver my stuff here just like your mom is doing.”

“Hey speaking of moms,” said Yumi, “did things work out between you and yours?”

“Well there’s still a lot TO work out there…but yeah, we’re on the right road.”

Yumi smiled and came over to the sofa to sit by Rich.
“You know,” she whispered before speaking up, “I had said that when I found a new home…I’d need something, a constant…to always assure me I was home, to make me smile. If you hadn’t agreed to come and live here with me…” she took his hand, “…I wouldn’t have that right now. I’m glad that this is truly OUR home.”

“Yumi, if you’ll always be my constant I’ll always be yours,” smiled Rich. “Always.”

“Always,” grinned Yumi.

Just as they were literally getting closer, the two noticed something on the pillow resting between them.

“…Hmmm…who’s was this?” asked Rich.

“Don’t know,” said Yumi, “City Hall said one of the furnishings was accidentally left by some people who lived here once, before they moved away.”

“These initials…” said Rich, “ ‘N&P.’ Yumi…you don’t think maybe Nyne and Peter snuck this one in before leaving do you?”

“…No,” said Yumi, “it is kind of mysterious, but I don’t see when they’d have had the time.”

“…Hmm…” smiled Rich, as he put the pillow down.
