=================== [ E A R T H B O U N D ] =================== ------------------- [ PSI and Enemy Guide ] [ By Svbman ] [ Svbman@lardpirates.com ] [ Version 1.2 ] [ 2.14.02 ] ------- Seven years ago, in 1995, Nintento came out with an SNES RPG EarthBound. It wasn't the greatest hit of all time, but it quickly gained fans and would continue to be a great game for years to come. Today, there is even an online community, Starmen.Net, dedicated to being a fun place to read about EarthBound, and to talk and be a great gathering place as well. EarthBound's main character, Ness, made a suprise cameo in the hit N64 came Super Smash Brothers. EarthBound quickly became known once again, and more and more people enjoy the game. It's because of this community of EarthBounders, that I made this guide. It seems people are having more trouble with the enemies and PSI abilities now than the walkthrough. So read and enjoy the SNES RPG epic EarthBound more than ever before. ----------------- [ TABLE OF CONTENTS ] ----------------- I. Contents II. Author's Note III. Disclaimer IV. Updates V. The Criminal Caterpiller trick added with new Game Genie codes. I also changed some things on the guide. ( Version 1 - 8.1.00 - ) First version of guide. Tricks section in the works. -------------------- [ EARTHBOUND'S HISTORY ] -------------------- EarthBound is known as Mother 2 in Japan, where the Mothers are major hits. Mother (never released in America) was for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and was a great hit. Nintendo never released it for reasons I cannot remember. A man did make an EarthBound Zero (Mother) ROM, and many people love it. Mother 2 was released in both Japan and America. There are many differences between the two. Check out "Mother 2 to EarthBound and Back Again..." [ http://www.starmen.net/m2eb ] for info. Mother 2 is such a huge hit in Japan, that you can easily find it at most stores, but that is not the case here in America. If you are looking for a copy of EarthBound, check eBay [ http://www.ebay.com ] , your local FuncoLand store, or the FuncoLand website [ http://www.funcoland.com ]. Almost everyone in Japan knows Ness, the main character of EarthBound. And it was no suprise that he appeared in Super Smash Bros. over there. But NOA took a big chance by keeping him in the America version of the hit fighting game. But, sure enough, more people became interested in EarthBound. That's good for Mother 3. Mother 3 is currently being worked on in Japan, and is even being pre-ordered there. But it may not be released in America. Keep your fingers crossed that the great game will come to the states! Oh and since I wrote this, Mother 3 was cancelled to :( etc. ------------------- [ STORY OF EARTHBOUND ] ------------------- ( Taken from Nintendo's "EarthBound Player's Guide" ) Nested in his cozy bed at his home in the small town of Onett, Ness is lost in dreams of cookies and brightly wraped birthday presents when, suddenly, a violent crash breaks the peaceful silence of night. Sitting bolt upright in bed, he rubs his eyes, then rushes downstairs to find out what could have caused the tremendous tremor that ripped him from his sleep. Also alarmed, his mother is already downstairs. Ness is eager to investigate, and his mother reluctantly allows him to leave, but only after he changes out of his PJs. Once outside, Ness finds his small town all abuzz over a meteor that has crashed to Earth just a short distance from town. The police have constructed roadblocks at all entrances to the town, and no one is allowed to come or go. When he tries to get close to the crash site, he finds it, too, blocked by policeman who tell him to go home and go back to bed. Near the scene, he also runs into his bothersome neighbor, Pokey, who is pestering the police. After talking to everyone, including one man who claimed to be the first person on the scene, Ness returns home to report his findings to his mother, then goes back to bed. Just as he drifts back off to sleep, though, someone pounds on the door. He opens it to find a distraught Pokey on the doorstep. It seems that while Pokey was hanging around the crash site, his younger brother, Picky, disappeared. Because Pokey was supposed to be taking care of Picky, Pokey knows that he's in big trouble if he doesn't find his brother and him home before his parents return. He begs for Ness's help. Ness agrees to return to the crash site in the meadow near town. He sets out with his dog, King, and Pokey. At this time of night, with the police busy in town, monsters are lurking in the shadows. The boys fend them off with the King's help, and when they reach the meteor, sure enough, they find Picky. They plan to high-tale it home, but before they can leave the area, an eerie column of light pierces the dark sky just above the meteor, and they hear a peculiar buzzing voice address them. Buzz Buzz, a bee-like creature behind the voice, tells them that he has come from the future, ten years in the future, to be exact. He tells them of devastation at the hands of Giygas, the universal cosmic destroyer. He says that the people in the time and place he comes from tell a legend that says, "When the chosen boy reaches the point, he will find the light. The passing of time will shatter the nightmare rock and will reveal the path of light." Buzz Buzz believes that Ness is the chosen boy, and that the meteor portends that Giygas's evil plan has been set in motion on Earth. He believes that if Ness begins to counter Giygas immediately, he might have time to save the Earth from devastation. The legend also says that three boys and one girl defeat Giygas. He advises Ness that three things are of utmost importance: wisdom, courage, and friendship. Buzz Buzz joins them as they head home, and it's a good thing, too. On the way, they're attacked by Starman Jr., one of Giygas's henchmen. Buzz Buzz warns them that they'll be facing not only soldiers sent by Giygas, but also humans and animals that have been possessed by Giygas's evil forces. When they reach Pokey and Picky's home, their parents are already home, and the two boys are in big trouble. They're sent to their room, leaving Ness and Buzz Buzz to deal with the angry parents. Buzz Buzz isn't around for long, though - Pokey's mother mistakes him for a dung beetle and promptly grounds him with a fly swatter. In his waning moments, Buzz Buzz gives Ness some final advice. He whispers, "To defeat Giygas, your power must unite with the Earth's. The Earth will then channel your power and multiply it." He tells Ness of eight points, or sanctuaries, that he must visit. And with his dying breath, Buzz Buzz gives Ness the Sound Stone, a sacred stone that records the songs of the sanctuaries. Now Ness must pursue the adventure on his own, and following the advice of Buzz Buzz, he sets out for the city of Onett and the legendary sanctuary known as Giant Step. ---------------------- [ CONTROLLING EARTHBOUND ] ---------------------- ( Normal Controls ) While walking around the cities of EarthBound, there are many controls you can use. I can't think of a way to draw the SNES controler right now, so I will list the buttons and what they are used for. [ D-Pad ] - The D-Pad is used to move Ness and co. around the screen. It is also used to control the arrow when in the "Options" screen. [ A ] - Is used to open the "Options" screen and to select an option there. [ B ] - Used to bring up HP/PP Window, exit the HP/PP Window, and cancel a selection made in the "Options" screen [ X ] - Used to bring up the map if you have it. [ Y ] - Not used [ Start ] - It only starts the game, that's it. [ Select ] - Same as the B button [ R ] - Only used to ring the bell on the bike. [ L ] - Used to "check" surroundings and talk to people. You can press Select then L to enter the "Options" screen. Use L to select stuff just like A. ( Battle Controls ) During battle mode, the controls are very much self-explanitory, but some people may need help. As I said above, I can't draw the SNES controller, but here is a list of the buttons and their uses. [ D-Pad ] - Used to move arrow around the different options. [ A ] - Used to select an option or go into a sub-screen. [ B ] - Used to cancel action or exit sub-screen. [ X ] - Not used [ Y ] - Not used [ Start ] - Not used [ Select ] - Not used [ R ] - Not used [ L ] - Same as A --------- [ PSI GUIDE ] --------- This is a guide that shows you all of the PSI powers for all four of the EarthBound characters. It's an awesome C/C++ program that allows you to edit practicly anything you want. Get it at [ http://www.starmen.net/pkhack ]. You can also get a Sprite Veiwer and Sprite Editor there, along with info about the new PKHack versions. Currently PKHack Version 2 is out. Check back for info. ( Tricks ) Here you can find tricks you can do in EarthBound for various reasons. Most of which are good, heh. -- ( Criminal Caterpillar ) The Criminal Caterpillar trick will easily get you a ton of exp. really quickly. The CC is located in Dusty Dunes Desert and gives the winner of a battle massive exp, but little money. Here's how it works: ( 1 ) Get to DDD ( 2 ) Go north past the Drugstore ( 3 ) Go past the Mole ( 4 ) Make a right to the east after the horizontal rock wall. ( 5 ) Follow the wall east past Tala Ramah ( 6 ) Keep following the wall, past cacti, and stop when the wall takes a sudden turn north. This is CC teritory. ( 7 ) There should be two arranged cacti that you can walk between. And north there are some unarranged cacti. ( 8 ) Walk between the two cacti and walk all the way to the unarranged cacti and back. That's it. ( 9 ) Allong the way, you should spot a CC. When you do, chase him down and try to get him with a green swiril. If you do, you should easily win the battle and get your 30,000 exp! If it's black or red, be ready to fight. ( 10 ) During battle, CC uses PSI Fire Omega I believe. So have Paula put up PSI Sheild, and attack full force. Be sure to have some items to life you up and your PP! ( 11 ) Try to avoid all other enemies. They can waste your time and life. ( 12 ) Do this over and over until your level is really high! ( Game Genie Codes ) What? You're stuck already? Not to fear! Get your trusty Game Genie out and have a little fun! --( Normal Game Codes ) DB23-77D1 Start with a level 9 character DE23-77D1 Start with a level 15 character 7423-77D1 Start with a level 50 character 1723-77D1 Start with a level 100 character EE23-77D1 Start with a level 255 character EE2E-7D01 Start with a super strong character BB2D-5461 Start with a ton of H.P.
